The First Official Day As Queen
It was the sunlight streaming through the windows that woke her, along with the sound of birds chittering away on the roof. Normal sounds. Proof of life sounds. Sounds she still marveled at after a hundred years of missing them. Without any sounds of activity coming from downstairs, Zelda was content to remain in bed, eyes closed against the red warmth of the sunbeams on her lids, listening to the birds.

She wasn't going to stay there all day, but just a few more minutes of enjoying the peace. Not quiet, but peace.

After a little bit longer, Zelda reluctantly pushed back the blankets and stood, stretching as she yawned. She looked over the railing down into the common room, and immediately saw what looked to be a note.

Written on napery. Oops. They'd need to get more paper soon.

"Link?" she called out, listening for him. With no response, she made her way downstairs and read the scribbling. "Hmm. All right." She frowned a bit at the part about paying Pruce back. They'd need to figure out how to put rupees in her own pocket if she were to do things like this on a semi-regular basis. Or maybe just make and use royal vouchers as they did in the old days, and Link would go around settling the accounts when the day was over.

She looked out the window toward the bridge, and there was no sign of anyone, not yet. The men must still be tending to their own business, which was fine by her. She needed time to get dressed anyway.

Zelda went back up the stairs and opened the trunk, looking at the meager choices she had. All pants and blouses, mostly identical save for color variations. She put on dark blue pants and a white and blue blouse to go with her new circlet, then sat on the bed to brush out her hair, pulling strands from the front toward the back into a ponytail and braiding it down her back, leaving most of her hair free. Once done, she donned the circlet, then her boots.

Not knowing what time people would show up to work on the bridge, and being hungry at that moment, Zelda tucked the napery note in her pocket then left the house, carefully stepping over the loose planks, and made her way to Pruce's shop.

"Good morning," she said as she entered. "Link's apparently left me to my own devices today, and left me this." She pulled the napery out of her pocket and handed it to Pruce, smiling. "So what's on the menu?"

"Glad to hear we weren't about to be dumped rear over teakettle into the water, but thank you so much for all this hard work. It's certainly one less concern to worry about. I'll speak with Ivee about getting you all some lunch and something to drink. Is there anything else I can help with?" Zelda asked. It was on the tip of her tongue to ask them to "accidentally" damage that sign out front, but it wasn't entirely her call to make.

Wait.

Wait. Link. Link? I have a question. Link?

Link hadn't really gotten that far down the road, and thankfully hadn't run into the women he was looking for yet when Zelda's voice in his head made him jump. She sounded like it was potentially urgent.

"What? Are you okay?" She was only asking a question, but his imagination was already running over scenarios that had her in more danger than she probably actually was.

Would it be inappropriate if anyone were to, in the course of repairing the bridge, 'accidentally' your name sign out front of the house and gosh darn it, whole thing plumb fall over? she asked.

Blink blink. Blink blink.

Link let out a sigh that was both frustrated and relieved all at once. At least she wasn't in danger, but was that really important enough to sound that urgent?

"If you want to convince Bolson not to replace it, go for it," he said, shaking his head and biting off an amused-if-exasperated chuckle.

"I have an idea, men," Zelda said, clasping her hands together as well as she could while holding a mostly-devoured apple with one of them. "The sign was not Link's idea and he found it easier to go with the flow than to argue. But! What if in the course of all this oh-so-very-necessary bridge repair, someone were to accidentally, oh, I don't know, say, damage the thing to where it won't stay upright, gosh darn it, ain't that just a shame? Tsk. I mean, those little legs against these big planks? Something's going to give and it's more likely to be the sign. Don't you think?"

She beamed at them with a smile that was both innocent and cunning.

Dantz had been trying to get her attention, staring at her in alarm when she didn't appear to hear his answer of 'we've got this, but thank you.'

Then she just went right on into conversation as if there hadn't been a disturbing interruption in her attention.

The three of them looked at each other, trying to first, figure out what just happened, and second, decide if they should say no to the queen, or risk Bolson's theatrics over the issue; the queen's statement confirmed their initial thought about why that sign was even there in the first place.

Well, Bolson was going to just have to try to argue with a pretty face who wore a crown.

Nack walked over to the sign, studying how sturdy it was built and how well planted it was. He frowned when he realized that just giving it a good shove wasn't going to do it.

He looked at the other two. "Hey, this looks like a good place to drop the old support beams when we're done replacing them. Heavy things like that, sure as shoot this sign'll hold up to them."

Mmhmm yup.

Thadd choked on laughter, while Dantz did his damnedest to keep a straight face. "Good call," Dantz said, then looked at the queen and shrugged. "Accidents happen, I guess."

"Well, shoot," Zelda said in mock dismay, as she tossed the apple core into the running water below and cupped her cheeks with her hands. "And it looked so sturdy and everything." She shook her head slowly. "Tsk tsk. Well, it's unfortunate but what's done is done, and wouldn't you think that would be a much better spot for a table and set of chairs to sit out and enjoy an early morning sunrise, or tea with an afternoon guest? It had its day in the sun but we need to expand and make room for new things, don't we?"

Smilesmilesmile.

All three men were struggling real hard to keep from laughing. Not only was their queen living right there with them, she was precocious.

Nack was the one by the sign, so he was the one that decided to keep the laughter at bay by actually studying the spot. "Well, Bolson can always be pacified by the fact that if you want to keep your table and stairs from getting soaked whenever it rains, you'll need a-"

He looked at the others for help for the word he wanted, trying to pantomime what he was thinking of.

Dantz and Thadd looked at him blankly before Thadd snapped his fingers. "Oh, a gazeebo?"

Nack pointed at him. "Yes! That! Thanks, I knew there was a word for those things."

It wasn't entirely easy to hear them over the complaints gurgling up from the creek below as the water gushed and twisted around the bends and over rocks and fallen branches. But she could make out just enough to follow what was being said, especially with Nack's hand gestures.

She clasped her hands together, the fictitious attitude replaced by a real one as her eyes lit up. "Oh? But definitely? That would be delightful! I did so love taking breakfast out on my balcony when I lived in the castle, and that would be a good way to shield the sun and more likely the rain! If we especially used re-purposed wood, it would be even harder for anyone to complain about it!"

"As long as you keep a somewhat firm hand on Bolson but otherwise let him have fun designing one, you'll have the best gazebo seen in the last couple centuries," Dantz said. "Bolson can go a bit overboard if he's left to his own devices, but point him in the direction you want him to head, and he makes some pretty nice stuff."

Thadd looked up at the house. "Give him some room, he might outdo himself if you tell him you want that house to look like a castle without being too crazy."

"I don't want to get too fancy over the rest of you," Zelda said. "I know I'm the queen, and I do intend to have the castle restored, but it just feels wrong to have the house done up too grand in comparison to the other houses. I'm still one of you. And I don't want the house to collapse under the weight."

She hesitated. "But having a small balcony on the roof would be a lovely addition, as I do so miss mine."

The three men exchanged a look at the 'still one of you' bit. That went farther in their minds to earn their respect than just about anything else. To have the wealth and history that she did, and she still wanted to live just like the rest of them?

"I'm beginning to see why Tokk admired her so much," Thadd said quietly to Dantz.

"Same here," Dantz agreed, then looked up at the house in question, squinting against the sun at it. "Well, I can't say you're the only one who ever wanted a balcony around here," he said, raising his voice so the queen could hear him. "But nobody's ever felt it was worth it to alter the buildings. But I guess if you're having Bolson doing something around here already, wouldn't hurt to ask him if he has any ideas on how to do it." He looked back at her. "He might be pricey though. I think you'll be looking at a lotta stone working, and that's not cheap or easy."

"Link can afford it. The question is can I talk him into it?" She looked at the small lean-to of an animal shelter. "Also, I'd like reuseable wood to be able to restore that animal shelter. I need a horse for short travel distances, and either that thing is getting repaired and used, or torn down and out of the way."

She looked up at the sun then at the men. "That's enough chatter. I'll see about getting some lunch sent to you, and the bridge is looking magnificent. Thank you for all your hard work."

Thadd tipped his hat. "Any time-" he tripped briefly, his automatic response to be 'ma'am,' but changing course quickly to "-Your Majesty."

"We'd be much obliged about that meal," Dantz said.

Zelda returned to Sophie's shop, expecting to find Ivee there as well, knocking on the door and cautiously opening it. "Hello? T'is but I, the queen?"

Seldon was still minding the counter, and surrendered to the fact that he'd be doing that all day, so he'd pulled up a stool behind the counter and started doodling for want of anything mentally stimulating to do. Usually just being out in the sun was enough to keep him entertained, but being trapped inside made him stir crazy.

He looked up at the knock, wondering who out there would knock on a store's door, then noticed the queen seconds before she spoke up.

"Come on in," he said, putting down his pencil. "No need to knock on the door of a store during business hours. The girls are back in Sophie's work room, if you're looking for them."

"I didn't want to startle Sophie," Zelda said. "Do you have any suggestions what to do about getting lunch out to the men working on the bridge?"

Seldon couldn't help but smile that the queen was already figuring out how to handle his daughter's oddities. But she asked a question, and that required attention and a bit of thought. "Guess it is going on lunch time, isn't it? Ivee's already going to be cooking for the lot of us here, it seems a bit unfair to dump more on her head. If you can convince Ivee to watch the front for me, I can run over to Clavia's, ask her to do it. Or we can find some way of making it up to Ivee to ask her."

"I can watch the front and call Ivee up if there's something I can't handle while you go talk to Clavia?" Zelda suggested. "Or better yet, I could go speak with Clavia, since I'm the one arranging lunch, and you know more about the running the shop."

"I think that second option would work better," Seldon agreed. "I wouldn't want you to feel on the spot if a customer came in while I was away, by some strange chance. Want me to tell the girls you'll be back in a few minutes, then?"

"I'll go tell them, in case Sophie needs to snag me for another measurement really quick before I disappear again. They're back here, you say?" Zelda wandered toward the back room and again knocked quietly. "Your queen has returned," she announced as she carefully opened the door.

If Ivee hadn't been there, keeping Sophie from becoming so totally engrossed in her work that the outside world ceased to exist entirely, Sophie might've jumped at the knock.

Not willing to miss a stitch, she didn't look up from her sewing machine as she greeted the queen. "Welcome back. I only have one sleeve done on this first dress, I'm working on the second right now."

"It should be done by dinner, which brings me to why I'm here. Lunch. I'm about to go talk to Clavia about providing the men with food," Zelda said as she wandered over to study Sophie's work without looming over her too much. "I wanted to check in and make sure you didn't need me for anything before I ducked out again?"
