Dick studied the pale face before him, the ashen skin stretched taut over a narrow jaw and pointed chin. Big eyes, almost black in the dim, were unfocused or too focused on just one thing.
He wasn't responding.
Dick shifted, blocking Duo's view of the body, lifting his hands to cradle the boy's face so he couldn't look around, look away, but had to look at Dick. Dick balanced mostly on his good foot, dropping the other knee to the floor.
"Duo. It's not you. You're here, safe and sound." Which was a lie. It wasn't Duo, not exactly, but safe and sound wasn't something Dick would have applied to them before. Still...
"You can't be in two places at once. The future is malleable. This pilot changed things, so this will never be you. This is a person who affected your life to keep this from happening to you, and we're going to show him great respect. But this isn't you." He spoke softly, trying to catch and hold the teenager's gaze.
He didn't go into more detail; he suspected most of what he was saying was lost, anyway. Mostly, he wanted to get Duo listening again. They could deal with things then.
