"The least you could do was nothing," Hannah said after a long moment of quiet. "Plenty of other people would have done nothing. Plenty of other people did do nothing." Mike would have come, she knew he could have, but she couldn't stand to face him right now. Not when looking at him would only serve as a reminder of how badly she had fucked up.
"Thank you, Vax," she said again, quietly. "You...I...just thank you." He was so kind and she wasn't really sure what to do with that. He reminded her in many ways of Sam. Sam had always been so wonderful. Sam and Beth both. Thinking about her sister made her feel cold and empty inside and she wrapped her arms around herself.
"Beth is all alone now." She felt guilty, more than she could even say. It wasn't fair that she had been saved and her sister was alone. Then something he said hit her and she looked confused. "Magic?"
