They were certainly well versed in avoiding their issues. Even Pike, for all that she seemed like an open book. He had spoken with her privately on enough occasions to know there was quite a bit she kept to herself. Vax walked away from things, both literally and by closing himself off. Keyleth pushed away difficult emotions, uncertain how to deal with them. Scanlan used his jokes and quips to hide how he truly felt. Grog preferred anger to any other feeling. And he and Vex had their masks. They were a tragic bunch of fuck ups, that was for sure.
"People will die," he said after a moment. "There is no point in pretending they will not. We are not going to have a clean victory, no matter how many Vestiges we gather or how hard we fight. People will die. Our friends will likely die. We will not all come out the other side of this." It hurt to say the words, but they were facts. There was no point in hiding from them. "We will do our best, but there are three dragons, and we can only do so much. I could be wrong. I hope I am wrong. But the task before us is daunting."
He looked down at his hands. "I am not afraid that I will die," he admitted. "If I die, it will be for the right reason and doing the right thing. No...I am afraid that I will live."
