The hardest part about this trip was walking past the tanks of snakes and other reptiles. Ray had found himself drawn back towards the snakes a few times to point things out to Mick like the coloration of a particular corn snake or to ooh and aah at the banana ball python that was curled up in a tank of it's own. He spent a good ten minutes smiling excitedly and dragging his finger across the glass of a tank as a group of bearded lizards watched his hand movement with curiosity, some of them climbing over their brothers and sisters to get a better view of what was going on. He happily pointed out a rather small guy with red coloration around his ear who seemed to be vying for human attention. They all seemed healthy and relatively happy which was more than he could say for the tank of leopard geckos nearby who all looked sickly and too thin. He frowned over the size of their tails, informing Mick (unhelpfully) that this particular brand of gecko stored fat in their tails. A fat tail was a sign of a healthy gecko. The fact that they were all thin wasn't too good of a sign. Nevermind the fact that they all looked dead anyway. These lizards were also nocturnal. They woudn't be up and interested in anything until later.
Moving back by the tank of turtles, Ray frowned as he watched the older man. He'd been more than happy to talk Mick's ear off about any and every reptile or amphibian within the shop but... Mick only seemed partially interested in it. Not that he really blamed him. Ray knew he could ramble on about any topic to the point where no one really cared anymore. This was different. This was Mick being grumpy and Ray starting to wonder if he should give the older man the opportunity to get a word in edgewise. There was bound to be a lot to talk or think about before making a decision and Ray had sort of blown a lot of time being overly excited about baby lizards and various snakes. There was no way he really wanted to listen to Ray talk about substrate or debate turtle vs tortoise or talk to someone who worked their about water filtration or habitats. There was no way any of this could be fun for Mick even with Ray tugging him along and pointing at one thing or another like an overly excited child.
Moving back towards Mick he nudged the older man gently. "So... I was kind of thinking that maybe this isn't too fun for you." He started, trying to prove to himself that he wasn't quite as oblivious as he seemed. "And I was thinking that maybe you'd appreciate it if we got out of here. I can always have these long, possibly tedious conversations with someone who works here some other time." And he was thinking that, if he got aquatic turtles, he couldn't just bring them home with nothing set up. He'd have to get everything ready for them and their water at an optimal temperature first. Same thing with a tortoise. He would have to get a place set up for it before he could justify bringing one home. He wasn't 12. He should be more responsible. "You can always come with me once I've gotten the boring habitat portion of everyting out of the way." He shrugged. He wanted to ask Mick what was on his mind. What could possibly be eating him up but he was occasionally worried about overstepping boundaries. They were friends with an attachment to one another who occasionally (okay, more than occasionally) slept together.
"C'mon..." He said, tugging at the older man's sleeve to avoid taking his hand or doing anything that might be too affectionate or out of line in public. "I think we discussed a movie night. We can pick up junk food on our way back to my place. I'll put on Aliens. See if you like it. If not... we'll find something else to watch. No sci-fi. I'll let you pick."
