text to harry wells.

✉ How did you propose to Tess?

text to len.
✉ So, what do you think about marriage?
✉ Like as a general concept.

✉ Actually.
✉ She proposed to me.
✉ And it was less of a proposal.
✉ Than telling me that if I was going to keep her awake for 2 and a half nights straight, I had better damn well make an honest woman of her soon enough.

✉ Oh.
✉ Okay.
✉ Wow. I didn't really need to know that much.
✉ Two and a half nights?
✉ Never mind.
✉ So...I mean...Joe's not here. And my dad is...yeah. So...I could use some advice?

✉ Yes?
✉ That's not that odd.
✉ We'd stay up for five nights in a row sometimes when we were really trying to bang something out.
✉ Two and a half days was a relatively short marathon session.
✉ We had a lot of research to get through.
✉ I'll do what I can, Barry.
✉ What's worrying you?

✉ Research.
✉ Right. Yeah. You're totally right. Who hasn't researched for days.
✉ So the thing is, I've always known I wanted to get married.
✉ I mean...my mom and dad loved each other so much and their marriage was...perfect.
✉ And I really love Len. And I know I want that with him.
✉ I just don't know if he wants that. Or how to go about that. Or anything really.

✉ Have you not talked about it before?
✉ Even just how he might feel about the institution in general?

✉ Not really.
✉ I mean...he didn't have the best example of marriage.
✉ But I don't know if that means he doesn't want it at all.
✉ He doesn't like paperwork. But apparently that's a criminal thing.
✉ You know...courthouses. And warrants.

✉ All of that stuff is superfluous.
✉ Paperwork, courthouses.
✉ You can easily have someone else deal with all of that.
✉ The issue that would be the most concerning would be the lack of a good example.
✉ And what was taken away from the one that was had.
✉ I mean, things like that can sour someone's perspective entirely.
✉ Maybe even make something that official seem like a trap?
✉ You know, you can just go buy a set of rings without all of the rigmarole involved, right?
✉ Ceremony is ceremony but as long as the relationship strength is there, all of that is, well.
✉ Superfluous.

✉ You're right.
✉ Len and I don't need to get married.
✉ We already have a great relationship and we love each other.
✉ The rest is just...stuff.
✉ Thanks, Harry.

✉ ???
✉ Sort of antiquated. Lots of paperwork.
✉ But this is coming from someone with a criminal record.
✉ They're fun to crash.

✉ Just curious.
✉ Since we escaped our weird, non-consensual marriages.
✉ Is there more paperwork if you have a criminal record? Or are you saying criminals don't like paperwork?
✉ Weddings can be nice. I guess.
✉ I mean they aren't the important thing, but parties are always fun.

✉ Consent probably makes the whole thing more appealing.
✉ There's always more paperwork.
✉ But no, we don't like it.
✉ Especially paperwork that usually requires you to go to the courthouse.
✉ Active warrants could be a mood killer.
✉ I've only ever been to one's I wasn't invited too.
✉ You're right about the parties.
✉ I had a pretty bad example growing up so I'm not exactly an expert.

✉ It definitely does.
✉ And yeah. I can see how that would be a problem. Nobody wants their wedding plans interrupted by an arrest.
✉ I haven't been to many. But I've seen them. You know. Pop culture loves weddings.
✉ My parents were a great example, before my mom died. They had the kind of marriage most people want.
✉ I always wanted something like that.
✉ But I get why you wouldn't, considering what your dad was like.

✉ It's an easy problem to avoid when you're not the type of person anyone wants to marry.
✉ Pop culture only shows you the pretty pictures.
✉ But your parents were probably a good example because they loved each other. That's the part that matters.
✉ The rest is just paper and jewelry. Maybe some tax breaks.
✉ At least that's the way I always saw it.
✉ Mom married dad because that's what you did when a baby was involved. Didn't turn out to be enough reason to stay.
✉ I'm guessing when you pictured something like that it probably wasn't with someone like me.

✉ I think you're not giving yourself enough credit.
✉ I still have a video of my mom and dad's wedding. So that's a real one.
✉ Yeah. They really did.
✉ You're right. The important part is that the people involved love each other. Not the legal stuff.
✉ I'm sorry your parents weren't a good example.
✉ I don't know.
✉ I mean...literally I pictured Iris for most of my life.
✉ But in a less specific sense, I pictured someone I love, who makes me happy...and who I hopefully make them happy too, and who I want to be with for the rest of my life.
✉ You kind of fit the bill there.

✉ How about we stop dancing around what you're not asking me so you don't get
too anxious.
✉ The answer is I'm not ready for something like that.
✉ But it doesn't mean I never will be.
✉ You make me happy and I love you.
✉ I probably don't say it enough.
✉ But I've never been very good at that.

✉ I'm actually pretty not-anxious about this.
✉ Shocking, I know.
✉ I get it. I do.
✉ And I sort of realized, while we were talking, that at the end of the day, our relationship is the important thing, not labels and paperwork.
✉ I love you too.
✉ And you say it plenty.
