Hope was still working on learning her way around the school. It was big. Much bigger than she had initially realized, which was saying something because she thought that she had probably explored everything she was allowed to that first day, clamoring in excitement the entire time. She had taken to using afternoons to explore the grounds, waiting until she knew that Daniel was home so she could call him and talk her through whatever was going on. Or, sometimes, even acting out some of their plays over the phone. It was hard being so far away from her brother, especially as he had served as her near constant companion for most of her life. While she knew that she should be spending more time with her classmates, who were all great, Hope was having a hard time not immediately calling Daniel.
"Hark! Did you hear that? Twas a sound as though a foot did fall on leaves. Be still and listen," she insisted to her brother over the phone as she made her way along one of the trails in the wooded area, ducking behind a tree as though something was approaching and then peering around the edge of it.
"I agree. We must hasten away from this place before we are found and betrayed. I shall fly one way," she held her free arm out to the left, "while you go the other. We shall arrange to meet in the same spot in one day's time. Be quick, and silent, and unseen. I take my leave of you now." That had become their standard closing when they were in play mode. Ending the call, Hope pushed the phone into her pocket and then raced along the trail as fast as she could go because, until she had broken the treeline, she was still supposed to be in character.
Once she broke into the clearing, she turned around to gaze back at the trees, throwing her arms out in celebration before dropping to the ground. "We shall not be taken alive. This day nor any other," she murmured quietly to herself, already starting to consider the adventures for the next day, which was precisely why she hadn't bothered to take note as to whether there was anyone else in the vicinity.
