The trek north had not gone quite as easy as Rita would have liked. While Longshot's luck had given them a general sort of path to take, it had not narrowed them in with the pinpoint accuracy that she hoped. On the one hand, it was nice to be away from the Company's tight clutches, but she hated to be gone for too long because she wasn't sure what would happen to their son. So Rita was twitchy by the time they got to New York. It was a big city, loud, crowed and thirsty for blood at the edges. The people who lived there could fools themselves all they liked, but one day it would rise up to crush them. It had that tang in the air.
The bonus was that, as a big city, it was easy to blend in. All you had to do was step into the crushing waves of humanity. It was good cover, but it also meant that the very people they were looking for had good cover. It had been so many years, and she had seen so many faces come and go, not just in the Company but also in the line of work, that it could be hard for her to separate them. It all blurred together sometimes, and none moreso than when her senses were being assaulted by so much sensory input.
She was trusting the Art's luck would hold out and work to their advantage. And they still had no way of being positive whether the kids were in New York; it was just where they had been drawn. It might take more than one day even if they were in the city itself. Rita cracked her knuckles. "I really wish there was an easier way to do this," she muttered to Art as they continued down the street. "Some of these people smell really bad. And they keep bumping into me." Both of those were limb stealing offenses as far as she was concerned, but she was working on being good. Just for a little longer. Once they had the kids on their side, once they stormed the Company, then she could be as bad as she wanted to.
