I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
Who: Longshot and Spiral with Shatterstar (NPC)
What: Saying good-bye before a mission
When: October 11th, Early Tuesday morning
Where: The Company nursey
Warning: Sad cutemess
It was barely past dawn when they finally let Spiral and Longshot see their son. It was protocol not to tell them when they'd be allowed to visit Shatterstar or allow the visits to be long, but the boy was the only leverage they had against their best trained hunter/killer team so allowing them access, especially before a long mission where they could easily escape was necessary. Some of the staff also felt badly for the pair, especially in the nursery where both units had grown up. Longshot especially had been a personable child who'd grown up into a charming young man.
Geared up except for their weapons, they was let into a private session room so they could be monitored while interacting with their child. As had been suspected when Spiral was put into the breeding program, the two's progeny already outclassed both of his parents at the same age in every way. Unfortunately, the pair hadn't produced any more offspring and there was talk of threatening to separate them to try to force the issue. Psychologists warned against this tactic, fearing it would backfire badly, especially with Sprial.
As soon as the door slid shut behind them and they saw Ben laying on a couch, half-dozing from being woken to see them off, Art felt something fall away. In this room, for these brief moment, he and Rita could really put behind all of the dehumanizing training and protocol and just be people. Parents with their son. He was pretty sure it was the only thing holding the fraying threads of Rita's sanity and way grateful for every moment of it, for her as well as himself.
He held back, letting Rita go to Ben first. She needed him more, especially before a long mission like the one they were heading out on. Besides, it made him feel nice and warm, watching them together. He wanted to see that everyday. Always. But it just wasn't a reality.
Not yet. Someday, they'd figure a way out and take Ben away from the Company. Disappear and live happily ever after like the fairy tales. This fantasy was what really kept Art going. Nothing else made everything else worth enduring.
