Illyana had pointedly been ignoring the fact that Limbo was getting worse. The edges of her circle had been steadily eroding. There were more and more of the monster incursions, and she wasn't at all happy about it. Unfortunately, she also wasn't sure that to do about it. Most of them had figured out how to sense when she was coming and didn't dare to cross into the circle then because they had seen the slain bodies of their comrades that she had littered across the landscape.
She knew, of course, that if she asked Piotr or Kitty or any of the adults that they would help her, but she didn't want to reveal too much about the world. It was better to play it off, admit that it was a way station but not speak about it other than that. Too much information and people might start asking questions that she didn't want to answer. So, basically, she was going to have to figure out how to handle it on her own. It wouldn't be that bad; she'd done it before, after all. That was when she had been younger, not as well trained and not nearly as adapt with her powers as she was now. It shouldn't be an issue for her to sway the tide; it was just taking the time to do it.
Soon but not that day. At least that was what she said to herself when they took off on an approved trip off campus once classes were done. As long as the sword remained, it was fine. They could pass back and forth as much as they liked. In a few years more, she would be able to expand the circle, fortify the perimeter, maybe even figure out a way to build a way to keep them out for once and for all.
She had left the group to their shopping, expecting to simply pop back to the mansion for a strangler and then return. The instant she arrived in Limbo, however, she saw that everything had gone to hell. The sword was gone, the circle destroyed. Her mind had barely registered those things when a hand reached out from behind her, grabbing tight around her arm. Illyana jerked away and the claws raked across her skin, cutting deep and leaving her bleeding. The smile of the monster behind her was cold and cruel and deadly. The second swipe of its claws left a trail of scratches across her cheek as she frantically ported away from it and back to her friends.
Appearing in a flash of yellow, she decided. Something had to be done now. "I'm sorry," she started before any of them had a chance to really react to the fact that their friend had reappeared, bleeding. "Something's happened in Limbo. There are monsters, demons. I need your help."
Then she opened a number of portals, catching her friends up in them and flinging them into Limbo without even enough focus to ensure that they all ended up together.
