Setting her journal aside, Nona brushed the tears off of her cheeks and poured another shot of bourbon into her glass. Things had been going well for the past few days, but every time Nona was alone, every time she allowed herself to think, all she could think about was how she’d almost lost another sister. Once those thoughts entered her head, there wasn’t anything Nona could do but cry. How could she have not warned Deci about the attack, just on the off chance she might go to Hogsmeade? How could she have known Deci was going to the doomed town?
“Get over it, Nons,” Nona told herself, shaking her head and downing the alcohol. Danny would be here soon. He would calm her down.
Danny arrived almost a half hour after Nona asked for him. He was with Ally at her flat and before he left he had to tell his girlfriend where he was going. She was clearly too tired to argue with him about this and simply let it go. Nevertheless, he could tell she was none too pleased. He and Nona did have a past and although it was nothing serious, just purely physical, there was nothing there between them now. They were friends and that was it.
Standing at her door, he gave it a gentle knock then slipped his hands into his pockets and patiently waited for Nona to answer. He owed it to her to be here.
Pulling her wand, Nona flicked it at the door and watched as it swung open. “Come in,” she said, curling her legs up under her as Danny entered. Nona was a strong woman, and able to handle all situations, but when it came to her little sister, she could be reduced to tears in seconds with thoughts of Deci being hurt, so right at that moment, Nona felt like a little girl again.
“Danny,” she said, pouring another glass before offering him the bottle. “Thank you.”
Danny carefully entered the place and made his way to where Nona was sitting. By her journal alone he knew she was upset, but seeing her now he could finally see how bad this truly was for her. Whatever this was.
“Of course,” he said as he sat down in chair opposite from her. He waved off the bottle when she offered it to him, not in the mood to drink. “What happened?” He asked her right away, cutting through the small talk and wanting to get right to the point. She was very upset and he didn’t want to see her like this. It didn’t make sense to him in a way because Nona always came off as this strong woman. Now here she was, crying.
“Hogsmeade,” Nona said, staring at the liquid in her glass before setting it aside without drinking. “Deci was there after she got off work. She got hit by a spell. I don’t know whose, or if it was on purpose. . . but she fell. Hit her head.” A fresh set of tears began rolling down Nona’s cheeks as she brought herself back to the image of Deci falling limply to the ground.
Shaking her head, she tried to push the thoughts away. She was the strong one. She took care of her sister, and now Deci was fine. “I was supposed to protect her. When she moved out of the house, Mother made me promise to protect her. And I failed.”
Danny would lean forward, resting his elbows on his knees and shake his head. “Nona, no. You didn’t fail. She’s still alive. You took care of her like you promised...” he trailed off, his eyes scanning her face closely. In a way, he could begin to understand why she was so upset. He knew what it meant to want, to need to take care of family. Even he felt protective of his little brother. And while she wasn’t exactly family just yet, Ally meant so much to him that he had to take care of her.
“You had no way of knowing that she was going to be there. That is not your fault, Nona. Understand that,” he added in a firm tone.
“I should have warned her,” Nona said, shaking her head. “I should never have to worry about her safety. After Secunda died. . . when I joined up. . . I promised Decima I would never let anything happen to her. I’m her big sister. It’s my job.” Setting her head on her knees, she sighed. “When I brought her back here. . . she passed out. For hours. I didn’t know what to do. I just sat there. . .”
Danny shook his head again and said, “Nona. How can you warn someone of something when you don’t know what it is that they plan on doing?” He was trying his best to make her understand, but she quite visibly shaken up by this. Perhaps the drinking was a bad idea. “You’ve done your job. She’s okay now.”
He sat back in his chair, but continued to watch her closely. “So what did you end up doing then?”
She shrugged. “I just sat there. I was stunned. Couldn’t move for the life of me. I could just imagine her not waking up, and it froze me.” Running a hand through her hair, Nona closed her eyes and leaned back against the sofa. “I don’t like being like this,” she said with the slightest of chuckles. “This isn’t me. You know this isn’t me.”
“You can’t think like that. Never imagine the worst...” He encouraged her, hoping that he could some how turn her mood around. Talking was rarely his strong suit, so he was trying his best at the moment. Nevertheless he flashed her a smile when she chuckled. “I know this isn’t you, but we all have something or someone that can make us weak.” This was something he knew about far too well. “You can’t be tough all the time.”
“I’m supposed to be,” Nona said with a shake of the head. “I’m the strong one. I’m the cougar.” She gave him a grin then. “Literally and figuratively.” The grin settled into a grim line. “I kill people, for fun and for money. I’m a fucking Death Eater. But the moment I even get a thought that Deci might get hurt I get so scared. I’m not scared of anything. . .”
Danny would arch a brow slightly and give her a slight grin. “You were not always strong... Even as the cougar,” he teased trying to get a genuine smile out of her. If anything, he could make jokes and try to get her to relax.
“Oi, I kill people for fun, for the cause...” he began and leaned forward onto his knees once again. “I live for the adventure and the thrill where ever I can find it. There is nothing that can scare me. At least I thought there was nothing...” he trailed off, pausing for a moment. Nervously he brushed his fingers through his hair before finally adding, “there isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t worry about, Alecto. So all of us have a weakness somewhere...”
“I hate this,” Nona said with a grin, finally pulling herself out of her meltdown somewhat. “From the moment she was born I’ve been taking care of her. When she would get hurt as a child I would freak out more than Mother and Father would. Maybe that’s the reason I’ve never had a desire to have children. . . I’ve already fretted enough with my sister.”
“And clearly you’re doing well taking care of her. She’s doing better now, yeah? So what more can you ask for?” Danny could see that Nona was finally starting to calm down and this eased him. It meant that he was somehow getting through to her. Though he believed that it was easier talking to horses than it was talking to women. So to him, this was an achievement all on it’s own. “Maybe one day you will,” he said with a slight laugh. “If you keep up with the wolf you’ll end up with a liter of puppies,” he teased.
“Oh don’t even start on that,” Nona grinned. “He’s good for my stamina. And I doubt there will be puppies in my future. I don’t think I’m the type of woman he would settled down with,” she said. “I’m a bit too feline for more than just a romp in the sack. He’ll want a wolf for a true mate.”
Thinking of her times with Fenrir was good for pulling her away from the situation though. She liked the way the wolf made her feel, which was strange, given his age, but he was better than many of the younger men she’d been with. “What about you?” she asked after a moment. “Think you’ll have a little one or twelve with your woman some day?”
Danny looked down into his lap and smiled, his hands fidgeting with his robes a bit. He shrugged slightly and shook his head. Had Nona asked him this question when he was at the tender age of 20, he would have adamantly said no. Now however, he looked forward to the day where he would have a family with Ally and that forced a handsome smile to cross over his features. “One day,” he admitted. “When she’s ready, I suppose...” he trailed off, suddenly quiet.
Grinning, Nona got up from her spot on the couch and moved to Danny, leaning down to kiss the top of his head before going and taking her spot back. “You’ll make a good father,” she said with a nod. Falling silent for a few moments then, Nona looked over at her journal on the coffee table and shut it, rolling her eyes at the tear stains on the page. “Thanks,” she repeated. “I know it must be strange for you, to see me acting like this.”
Danny suddenly looked up after Nona kissed the top of his head. It was innocent and he knew that. A smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he watched her sit back down on the sofa. “Thanks,” he muttered softly. “I hope to be,” he added. Now that he was older, the thought of kids did cross his mind more and more. And while he’d like to wait a couple years or more to actually get started, should something happen sooner for him, he would be just as happy. Scared, but happy.
“Well,” he began as he stood up. “In a way,” he said, choosing his words carefully. “It’s well known how strong of a woman you are, but isn’t not much of a surprise to see you would be so passionate about family. I think we all are in our own right,” he assured her. And it was true, though his reaction would be different, he could still understand. “Your sister is lucky to have you looking out for her, Nona... We’re on the same side. If you need anything, let me know yeah?”
With a nod, Nona stood up as well, readying herself to walk him to the door. “I will,” she said. “I was just scared. I’m not used to being scared. I don’t think I handled it very well. I’ll try better next time.”
Sighing, she ran a hand through her hair, aware for the first time that her hair was unkempt and she was dressed in an old pair of sweats she’d found at the bottom of her drawer. It wasn’t like Danny hadn’t seen her in stranger clothes, but it still made her a bit self conscious. “I need to go check on her. I haven’t been in there in a few hours.”
Danny gave a curt nod and flashed her a quick smile. “Of course. I can see myself to the door, but you go check on her yeah?” He assured her. His eyes scanned her face and he could see the pain this caused Nona. Talking things out like this was not his strong suit, but he hoped that his visit helped in some way. A part of him wanted to stay and make sure she was okay, but he had a girlfriend who was terribly injured that he needed to take care of.
“Owl if you need anything yeah? I don’t know what I can do, but I’ll try and be of some help...” He trailed off as he placed his hand at the small of her back then brushed it along her forearm.
“You’ve helped more than you can ever know,” Nona said with a grin, laughing lightly as he touched her arm. “Now if only you were still single, that would be a great comfort.” Shaking her head, she sighed. “Nevertheless, I’ve lost my toy forever now. And Ally is a lucky woman. So go one and go take care of her. I’m sure she’s injured as well. I’ll take care of my sister, and maybe find some physical comfort of my own in a few days. Thank you, Danny. What you did tonight. . . It means a lot to me.” Nona wasn’t one for sympathetic talk and things of that nature, but by coming by and just letting her cry for a bit, Danny really had helped a lot. And she wouldn’t forget it. Ever.
Danny hung his head and laughed for a moment before looking to Nona again. “I’ve found my playmate,” he said, the mere thought of Ally bringing a genuine smile to his face. “And I’m the one who’s lucky because she’s the one who has to put up with me. But you’ll find a better toy... Maybe one that doesn’t need to be let out take a piss,” he teased as he nudged her playfully. His smile faded a bit, but it was warm and inviting as Nona thanked him. “Of course,” he said. “We’re friends yeah? No need to thank me then. I’ll owl you tomorrow to make sure everything is all right...” he trailed off as he opened her door. “Take care of yourself, Nona.” And with that, he left, shutting the door softly behind him.
“Oh shut it, you,” Nona said when he took a jab at Fenrir. She knew he didn’t approve of her liaisons with the wolf, and she full well knew the danger she was putting herself in, sleeping with him, but it felt so good she didn’t care. “I’ll be expecting the owl,” she told him before he left.
Turning away from the door after he was gone, she went down the hall to check on her sister. Still sleeping, just as she should be. Nona smiled in the doorway, then went back to the living room to finish her glass of bourbon and maybe read a book. She’d head back to Deci’s bedroom to check on her later. Right now she just needed to relax.
