I'm honored to accept leadership of Bourbon. Admittedly, it's still sinking in somewhat. But thanks to Adam, we've done something unprecedented and deeply needed -- we had an exchange of power that didn't come with violence or bloodshed. No-one had to die for a new leader to step up to this place and take us forward. And if that isn't a sign of positive change, I don't know what is.
I know Bourbon is a traditional pack, and I have no intention of overhauling that. Tradition has its place. We keep the things that sustain us and carry us through the hard times, the uncertainties, the strains. We keep the things that bring meaning to us. But to keep everything simply because it's in our collective attic is to stagnate. With all that's facing this island, none of us can afford to stagnate. The world is changing. In one of the deep ironies of life, in order for us to hold on to our way of life here, we have to change to keep up with the times, or else we'll lose everything. I have no intention of standing by and letting Washington, a city younger than this island's settlement, younger than the lineages of these packs, decide what we shall and shall not do. But I also know that co-operation, not stubborn resistance, is the way to ensure our continued autonomy.
There are four packs on this island, all with our own goals and ideals. We do not always get along, and that's a given. But this is a moment to put aside small differences and focus on the larger picture for Isle Royale. It is imperative that we work together for our common good. It is imperative that we work together for the safety of all our people. I hope that I can call upon all other leaders and seconds to meet regularly as we face the investigation of the murders as well as the political machinations that are looming over us, and decide how to move forward. Because we must move forward. There is nothing left to do. Doing nothing is not an option. Refusing to see the world around us is not an option. And fighting amongst ourselves is not an option. For this moment, so that we have a future, we must work together. I know we can and we will do whatever it takes to preserve what is dear and ensure this island becomes the kind of place we can all be proud of, not the stuff of tabloid gossip and federal censure. We can do better. We can be better. It only takes the will to do so.
I look forward to working together, with my packmates, and with the other packs. I have every hope for the future. Let's make it something to be proud of and let this moment of chaos and uncertainty be the lynchpin for change that will make our descendents remember us for generations to come, and the preservation of our way of life that will give them a history of their own to prize and protect.
