It was sort of disconcerting, Mal thought, to go from being in the middle of a job to suddenly… not. And the Island (it'd been weeks, and no one had bothered to come up with a better name - one of the girls had said something about once you'd named a place, you acknowledged it as more than temporary, and he thought there might be something to that) wasn't exactly… terraformed the way he'd expected. Sure, a few of the pleasure planets had more tropical settings, but he just wasn't used to sandy white beaches and forests and mountains all residing in the same climate.
Someone mentioned they thought they saw a polar bear, which was just confusing, but really, nothing about this situation was working out as expected.
But… there was something to be said about it that fell into the plus category, and it was something Mal didn't even want to acknowledge.
They were still discovering parts of the Island, even now, that did nothing but confirm that humans had been here. Generators that just needed a bit of tweaking to get working, well stocked homes and meal areas, but the best part was probably the farmland that they'd discovered just beyond the central settlement. A bit of searching, a bit of collecting, and they'd even found some farm animals. And sure, it had been years since he'd had to be concerned with animals - with the exception of the odd job - but there was something… greatly comforting, about watching the small herd of horses they'd found slip back into domesticity as he puttered away with making a paddock for them. He kept finding himself distracted, staring out into the field and remembering simpler times when he'd been young, spending his time being raised by farmhands in the absence of a father before the world went all to hell.
So… maybe there were some good things to come out of this gorram confusing situation.
