When he said 'doctor', Mandie had a feeling that he wasn't the sort of the doctor that would be greatly needed in this time and place. Now, if this Bernard did happen to be a medical doctor, she would happily admit to her mistake. But from what she could tell of the man and his peculiar behavior, Bernard was likely to be a psychiatrist. Or therapist? It honestly didn't matter. His occupational choice wouldn't stop her from trying to look for him. "I haven't met a Bernard yet but I'm sure we can find him in the morning."
He told her his name and she grinned a little wider. "It's good to meet you, Hubert. Wish it was under better circumstances," her tone indicated that she was trying a joke but who could laugh at a time like this?
A sound -an unusual pitch and snap- came from the dark and startled them both. Mandie jumped when he did, though more likely because he did. Putting a hand to her heart to calm herself, she swallowed and took a deep breath. "Probably an animal. Or water." He was right. Now wasn't a good time to go looking for anything or anyone. "You should pick a spot to try and sleep, if you can. I ... I can stay with you, if you want." Her hand dove into her back pocket and pulled out her father's pocket knife and held it out for him to see. "I'm no good with a gun but I'm handy with this."
