It made him happier to see that his words had reassured her, even if only a little. They would make it through this. That was what he was trying to convey to her, and having her believe it only reinforced the truth of it for him. "Anything," he said in answer to his girlfriend, a small smile on his lips. He'd give her the world if he could, but she already had it as a pilot.
Being led away from prying eyes widened his smile. Secret or not, he enjoyed the little perks of being in a relationship. Those weren't easy to maintain while constantly traveling, and he had been fine with that for years, but Emmett was much happier to have her. His long arms wrapped around her the instant she made contact, holding her as securely as padded steel bands.
"You can have this as long as you want it, sweetheart," he whispered into her hair, closing his eyes as he planted a soft kiss against the top of her head. It was an illusion that they could stay that way indefinitely, when there were too many people around and so much to do, but he could pretend. "Oh, Cait," he sighed, momentarily content. There were more words he could say, three of them that he hadn't said to her yet, but they would wait. Saying 'I love you' never seemed as sincere in an emergency.
