A red-eye flight always meant that Mandy was asleep on the flight. She was used to flying a lot, and it was just as common to sleep in an airplane seat as it was to sleep in her own bed. She knew the flight attendant would poke her awake to fasten her seat belt, so after plugging her headphones into her ears, she clicked her seat belt together, and snoozing before takeoff. The shudder and jolt of the plane woke her up--she was used to turbulence, but this was altogether different--and before she had a chance to brace herself, she felt herself lurch forward on impact. She instinctively gripped her head with her arms, her palms flat against the top of her head, her shoulders shrugged upward. She'd never been in any kind of accident, minor or otherwise, but it felt like human nature to protect her head as she braced herself.
The next thing she knew, she was waking up to the feeling of water on her feet. Her flip flops had fallen off upon impact and had started to float away as the water rose in the cabin. It was hard to focus on one particular thing--sounds of crying, wailing, groaning, nature sounds... someone talking... all that would've been drowned out by music. She vaguely remembered her headphones being ripped out from her ears, and with the fuzzy state of her head (likely in shock) she registered that her phone had flew out of her lap at some point. She was hanging funny in her seat, and she could tell something felt weird, but her brain wasn't registering the massive amount of pain that centered on her pelvis from her seat belt.
She unbuckled herself, not registering the sound of voices, someone instructing her. She saw her phone sinking into the shallow water. "Fuck, fuck, fuck," she muttered, worried about her phone. She couldn't void her warranty, she'd already used her phone insurance that month. Phones were expensive, man. She stumbled a little, kicking some water as she fell down. She didn't feel any pain as her knees began to bleed, soaking her long maxi dress along with the water. She swatted at the water, grabbing her flip flops before they got too far away, reaching down and fishing her phone out of the water.
