A light dusting of sand textured the soft wood platform of the windswept outdoor patio of Santo’s Smoothies. The sun was warm, but a chill salt breeze swept across the water. The tidepools were accessible, and it seemed like the storm that was forecast for tomorrow was still a ways off. It was a perfect day to get to work.
Santo Monico had kindly offered to keep space available at his smoothie bar for the beach cleanup crew to organize. Apparently, the fact that Santo Monico’s smoothie cups were no small part of this beach’s problems wasn’t lost on them, either. The manager had even offered the cleanup crew free smoothies on the house at the end of the day.
The smoothie bar staff helped set up a workstation at one of the outdoor tables, with buckets for trash collection and a complimentary round of chips and guacamole. Tom had laid out wetsuits, fins, and assorted diving gear, all neatly organized by size and type. The few necessary oxygen tanks were already stacked up outside of Santo Monico’s, ready for use. Small informational cards, also left by Dr. Paech explained the importance of tidepool and coral reef ecosystems, accompanied by hand-illustrated pictures. A grumpy-looking Tom himself was directing people, dripping in his wetsuit and looking like he’d rather be back in the water.
It would be easy for any of the tidepool crew to grab a bucket and get started, and some people had already begun cleaning in pairs. There were a couple of small dive groups, led by different leaders. The groups were forming and breaking up as people came, left, and stopped for lunch. Some people were already out in the reef, and others were still getting ready on the shore. Beach cleaning day was underway!
