Dean had been a little afraid that her family would reject him. After the things she said on the radio, he expected a very harsh welcome. He was a little shocked that her mother had seemed cordial, if not warm.
"It's nice to meet you," he replied, hoping he seemed polite enough.
Daphne looked miserable and his pity for her washed away any resentment for her comments on the air. When she broke down into tears he dropped the flowers on the table by the side of the bed and bent down to wrap his arms around her.
