As the daughter of one of the Wizarding World's most impressive Power Couples in recent memory, we haven't heard much from Verity Ashford. Her Mum, Celestina Warbeck, still tours and performs after almost forty years in the business, and her father Nathaniel "Nash" Ashford still works in Quidditch as a personal trainer, consultant, announcer and investor. Verity has escaped the public eye for most of her young life--that is, until recently. Her relationship with Puddlemere MVP Oliver Wood has brought the young woman into the spotlight alongside her handsome, talented, charming fiance. A place she takes with reluctant grace and poise.
Now the season's over, and Wood and Ashford have had two minutes to rub together without Quidditch Finals, Werewolf Attacks, or work to distract them, they agreed to sit down with Quidditch Monthly for an interview about their upcoming nuptials, famous family members and future plans for a family.
[Quidditch Monthly] So, to start us off... I suppose I'll ask the question that everyone wants to know. How did you propose?
[Verity Ashford] (With a glance over at Oliver.) That's a pretty funny story, actually. He tried twice before he actually managed.
[Oliver Wood] (laughs) The first time was on her birthday, but, well, let's just say I chickened out. The second time, I'd planned this wonderful dinner in the gardens at my family's estate. Everything was going brilliantly and then- it started to rain. In the end it was all really random.
[Q. M.] Random?
[Wood] I proposed to her at her place of work. Class act.
[Ashford] How long did you have that ring sitting in your pocket before you asked?
[Wood] Eh... (pained smile) At least a month?
[Q. M.] Sounds like you wanted everything to be perfect.
[Ashford] And it was perfect! I don't think he gives himself enough credit.
At this point, she reaches over and taps a sickeningly adorable kiss to his cheek and I can't help but smile. They remind me of Nash Ashford and Celestina Warbeck nearly thirty years ago; a partnership so inspirational and pure you get washed up in it.
[Wood] Only the best for my girl!
[Q.M.] Oh? Will it be a dream wedding then?
[Wood] I think any time you get to marry your soul mate that it's a dream. And a great excuse for a party!
[Q.M.] And how are your families reacting to the news?
[Ashford] Well, Da wishes he was a Bat, of course.
[Wood] (whispers) Puddlemere or death.(laughs) No. Honestly, our families couldn't be more thrilled for us. And I couldn't have asked for better parents-in-law. Nash has been as much of a father to me as my own was...
[Q.M.] Speaking of being a parent... or is it too soon to tell?
[Wood] Not at all. I want children. A whole Quidditch team's worth but I think Verity said she'd have me castrated past three. Yeah, can't wait to have kids. But we're happy just being us, for now.
[Ashford] Oh yes, I'm very much looking forward to being a Mum some day. But we're really very young. We've got a lot of time for it. I think we're just going to enjoy being together for a while first, before we start seriously thinking about babies.
[Q.M.] Well, if you're going to have a whole Quidditch team's worth, you'd better get started!
[Ashford] We'll see about that. (laughs)
[Q.M.] You both have had some really serious injuries in the last few months. Do you think that's helped you make your decision about marriage?
[Wood] Helped? No. If anything it's made getting to this point more difficult. There was a while there when neither of us knew what was going to happen. I'm just elated that she said yes.
[Ashford] Of course I said yes. Why wouldn't I? The chance to spend the rest of my life with the man I love? It's the best thing in the world.
[Q.M.] Even through all the hardships you two have faced recently, you two have stayed strong. What do you think is the secret to your staying power?
[Wood] She's my best friend. (smiling) There's a lot that goes into it but that basically sums it up.
[Q.M.] Were you friends before you were lovers?
[Wood] (laughs) We knew of one another. I wouldn't say we were really friends. It actually started off as a bet.
[Q.M.] A bet? Really?
[Ashford] I'm surprised it's not common knowledge, after what happened with the journals back in the day. (laughs) We... we jumped straight into dating. I don't think we were casual at all, even though we tried to be.
[Q.M.] Ah yes, the journals! You sell those at your place of work, right?
[Ashford] Yes, I work for George Weasley at his joke shop. Though, it's become so much more than a place that sells novelties. We supply all sorts of products to help and protect all sorts of people. He's rather proud of us, and he's consented to be my Man of Honor at the wedding.
[Q.M.] Man of Honor! That's a little unusual.
[Wood] We're not your typical couple. Plus, one of the groomsmen will in fact be a grooms-woman.
[Q.M.] And will she be donning traditional garb as well?
[Wood] Not as such. She's the closest I have to a sister so she'll have a clan token, certainly. And I'll be in my kilt, but I doubt anyone else will wear the family tartan. It's considered disrespectful.
[Q.M.] And what is the date we should all be marking our calendars with?
[Ashford] Early November, and that's all I'm going to say. (with a laugh) I don't want anyone else stealing my special day. (more laughter)
[Q.M.] I take it it's not going to be open to the public, then?
[Ashford] Knowing my mother, half the pictures taken that day will be leaked to the public. But no, it's going to be guests only during the actual ceremony and reception.
[Q.M.] Well, we at the magazine wish you both the absolute best. You'll have to tell us all about the wedding and your honeymoon after the fact.
[Wood] (laughs loudly) No, I don't think so.
[Ashford] (laughing, and blushing) No, we have to have some secrets. We've both made the horrible mistake of letting our private lives get out there int he public eye, and we'll never make that mistake again.
[Wood] Well, can you at least give us some clue as to where your honeymoon is going to be?
[Ashford] (looks to Oliver) ...I have no idea. Are you planning something?
[Wood] All I'm letting onto is that it's someplace warm.
[Q.M.] So, anywhere but Scotland!
[Wood] My lips are sealed.
[Ashford] And what great lips they are.
Ashford leans in for another kiss and I take that as my cue to wrap up this interview.
[Q.M.] You two are just so cute. Anything else you want our readers to know?
[Wood] Go Puddlemere?
[Ashford] Go Puddlemere.
The interview ends there, but the journey is just beginning for Oliver Wood and Verity Ashford. I will be checking back in with the Woods after the wedding so be sure to pick up a copy of Quidditch Monthly's January issue! Until then.
