"You've got to have a sense of humour," he said, still very close to her ear. Charlie really believed that. His entire family had been through some pretty horrible things during the span of two wars. Charlie was old enough to remember the atmosphere of fear in the first war and the moment of helplessness when his mother broke down hearing the news of her brothers' deaths. They had been undesirables for standing up for what they believed in. They had watched friends and allies fall fighting for that same cause. They lost Fred too. If the family didn't laugh sometimes, they surely would have broken apart. Fred would have wanted them to keep their smiles.
"What would you suggest I dream about?" he whispered in a low voice.
