It seemed as if the second girl's arrival was what the wolves needed to pounce. Two or three of them came out of the woodwork and started in toward the girls. Slow at first, but then more quickly. And then rather speedy indeed, so that by the time Verity's last sentence was out, they were upon them.
Verity only had time to look up before they were surrounded.
