who; Percy, Daphne and (NPC) Emerson Greengrass
what; meeting her daddy
where; Azkaban
when; Sunday June 13, One PM

Things may have been different at Azkaban Prison under Minister Shacklebot's administration, but that didn't mean that when Daphne and Percy showed up for their appointment to see her father, that they didn't need to be thoroughly searched. First they had to hand over their wands, and Daphne, her handbag. Next came a search for any dark artifacts hidden on their persons, and then a search for Muggle weapons. Daphne even had to remove all of her jewelry. It made her feel violated to be searched, even though she had come to see him before and she knew what to expect.

Cleared by security, they were lead down a long hallway to the visiting area, and then into a small room with two uncomfortable looking chairs, which was split by a wall down the center, made half of metal bars. They guard who brought them here told them to wait, and that Mr Greengrass would be coming in a few minutes. He went to stand outside of the door way in the hall.

"He doesn't cause trouble in here," Daphne told Percy as they waited. Her head was tilted down a little, and Daphne looked defeated. There may not have been Dementors in Azkaban anymore, but Daphne could still feel them there. Or, perhaps, it was just the idea of seeing her father in Azkaban robes again that made her feel so low. "No one's been able to visit Alcide for a while, because he's always causing some kind of mayhem here," she finished. It was her way of explaining why they were able to come to see her father. "I wish I could put more lipstick on."

Used to regulations and protocol, Percy had no problems with security searching his person. In fact, he went to the prison dressed simply on purpose, knowing he would be searched. It wasn't anything personal, it was for the safety of everybody involved. Percy never had a reason to visit anybody in prison before, and frankly, for a while, the prison didn't accept visitors at all.

The uncomfortable, joy-draining feeling that Daphne experienced wasn't only in her mind; Percy felt it too, but made no indication that he had. It wasn't a pleasant location. Sensing Daphne's unease and depression, he rested his hand upon hers, trying to encourage and support her. "Your lipstick looks wonderful," he said soothingly, and it was, which was why he knew her comment was prompted was nervousness. "I know your father will be happy to see you. Are you able to write to Alcide, at least?"

"He's been in seclusion for a while, so it's been a few weeks," Daphne told Percy, her voice small. It was right after his wife had written to him that Daphne was seeing a Weasley that it had happened. Daphne knew this, but she wouldn't mention it. At least Daphne's father didn't have such an issue with it. Or so Daphne thought.

Emerson came in then, dressed in Azkaban robes that looked like they had been worn many times, but they were clean. Despite being in prison, he still wanted to look presentable; he had some facial stubble, but it was minimal, and his hair looked clean and like it had been recently cut. He wasn't going to let himself go to shit, like some of the other prisoners did. He also wore handcuffs, and the way he shuffled his feet said his ankles were chained as well.

He sat down on the chair on the other side of the wall, and looked at his daughter for a moment, and then at her Weasley boyfriend. Emerson wondered what Daphne saw him in, and decided right then that his daughter must have completely lost her mind. Certainly, he had written to his wife about the issue, but Daphne had brought him to see him... This Weasley must be different than all of the other men she associated with and he didn't like it.

No. This certainly wouldn't do.

Emerson looked at Daphne again, and he gave her a very warm and very loving smile. He may not have approved of her boyfriend, but she was still his daughter and he still loved her very much. "You are growing up so beautifully, Queenie," he said to her.

And then Daphne completely broke down in tears.

Emerson looked at Percy again. "I'd do it, but..." He gestured to the bars which separated them. He tilted his head back then and looked up at the ceiling, not wanting to see him comfort her. As far as he was concerned, Percy Weasley wasn't even good enough to breath the same air as Daphne, let alone touch her. But he didn't want Daphne to cry so he had no other choice.

The moment Percy saw the expression on Emerson's face when he was looked at, told everything he needed to know about how Daphne's father felt about him. His own face darkened and steeled with anger, his eyes narrowing in an automatic reaction. Who was Emerson to judge? Locked in jail for being a Death Eater! It didn't matter to Percy that Daphne was sitting right there, he wasn't going to pretend that he was even a little alright with this.

When Emerson asked him to comfort Daphne, Percy almost felt like not doing it, just to spite him, his hands tightening into fists. Finally, Percy turned to Daphne and wrapped his arms around her, patting her gently upon the back. "It's alright," he said, though he wanted to add 'He's not worth it.

As Daphne continued to weep, Emerson decided to amuse himself with his own mind, in an effort to distract himself from the high-pitched whimpers coming from the other side of the bars. Not only did it hurt him when Daphne cried, it annoyed him too, especially after being locked in Azkaban for so long. He got annoyed very easily anymore. Of all the fucking men in the world, she had to go off and pick a Weasley, he thought, Unless it's something political, in which case she's proved her point by now and can move on. She's never been that clever, though. She'd be better off here with me than she would be with him. Who the fuck's gonna want her after she comes to her senses?

After what seemed like forever to Emerson (but which was really only a few minutes), Daphne finally stopped crying. She lifted her head and carefully wiped her cheeks. Her eyes were red and puffy, but her makeup hadn't run. She'd been using only Luxe products for the past few weeks. She was completely oblivious to any tension coming from Percy, and if she had noticed it, she would have only thought it a side effect of being at the prison.

Daphne took care to introduce the both of them, even though they already knew one another's names. "Are you all right, daddy?" Daphne asked, showing obvious concern at the pained expression on her father's face.

"Sore back," he lied, giving a (false) reassuring smile. "The beds are not too comfortable here."

After a bit of small talk between father and daughter, about mundane things like Daphne's cat, Emerson turned to Percy again.

"So. My wife tells me you work at the Ministry." He still looked pained, but he managed to keep his tone emotionless. He didn't want to piss Daphne off. She was hard enough to control as it was, and had always been openly defiant. It wouldn't have been wise for him to say, 'Queenie, my darling, do come to your senses and dump this poor piece of shit. You can do so much better. Just tell everyone you were drugged.'

Yeah, Daphne wouldn't have been too happy with her daddy if he'd said that.

Percy remained silent throughout; even when he was introduced, he simply gave a polite nod of the head. He recalled how, during the war, Emerson's name would pop up in conversation at the Minister's office... yes, Mr Greengrass was in deep. Not as much as Daphne's brother, but it was damning enough to secure him a cell in Azkaban.

If it wasn't for Daphne, he would've gotten up and left - he didn't need to take this sort of shit from anybody, least of all a Death Eater. When Emerson finally addressed him, directly, Percy kept a level expression and replied, "Yes. Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation."

Emerson didn't like how... cold Percy was behaving, but he expected nothing less. They were on opposites sides during the war. He would have thought that he would pretend to take interest at least, for Daphne's sake.

Oh, maybe she'd see it and get angry!

No, such luck for Emerson, though. Daphne was still oblivious. To them obvious dislike both of the men were displaying.

"Do you posses aspirations to become Minister?" he asked then, finally showing a genuine emotion--curiosity.

Still keeping his hand holding Daphne's, Percy wanted nothing more than to leave the man in his cold, dark cell forever and forget he ever existed. The only reason he behaved so aloof was because of him.

"If the opportunity presents itself," Percy replied, trying to sound casual, "I would take advantage of the situation." He had a feeling Emerson was trying to test him, to see how ambitious he was and not a slouch. At one time, he wanted nothing more than to become the youngest Minister of Magic, but over the years, seeing how stressful the job was, he approached the idea with a more mature outlook. It would be a nice thing to hold that title and wield such power, but it also meant a lot of responsibility. What he had told Emerson was true, however Percy had no immediate desire to take the position from Kingsley.

Hm. Well that showed some promise. Emerson liked the idea of seeing one of his daughters as the Minister's wife. There was one issue he saw, however...

"You do realize that if you marry her, that you will probably never be the Minister of Magic?" Emerson pointed out, and when Daphne opened her mouth to protest, he held his hand up to silence her.

"Perhaps," Percy responded quickly, "But I've been in politics long enough to know what to do to sway public opinion, if I wanted." He worked under Cornelius Fudge, after all, who was a master in that area. "I have no immediate plans to run for office, and by the time I do decide, if at all, the opinions of people may have changed. After all... Daphne is innocent of the crimes committed by her father and brother." His last words were spoken pointedly, meant as a subtle insult against Emerson.

He did not want to bring up the fact that he might not even want to run for Minister of Magic at all. He was still very young with many other options in front of him.

"Yes, all of us present are aware of the reason I am in here." Emerson knew it was a jab, but he wasnr going to take the bait. He had managed to lead a rather comfortable life on the inside, and he wasn't about to lose it. It was comfortable for Azkaban, anyway. He had already lost his freedom because of yhe Weasleys (and people like them), and it seemed like he was losing his daughter too, but there was no way in hell he'd lose his privledges on top of it all.

Emerson requested that Daphne leave the room, so he and Percy could speak man-to-man, and, of course, Daphne resisted. After a few moments of bickering, Emerson gave into his daughter, though he warned her, "If you say one word, I will write to your brother." And Daphne nodded her agreement, because telling Naill meant a hit to her allowance.

"Why?" Emerson asked, turning to Percy again. "Why her?" He nodded toward Daphne.

"Don't take it so personal," Percy said, sitting back in his chair and folding his arms across his chest, peeved, his words coming out more pointed than before. It felt much better to be able to converse freely, without worrying about upsetting Daphne. "I assure you, I am not dating your daughter to spite you or your family. She is a very talented and beautiful woman. We have a number of interests in common and we get along very well. I enjoy her company, as she does mine."

Emerson attempted to cross his arms against his chest too, but was prevented from doing so by the handcuffs. So, instead, he conceded to clasp his hands on the table in front of him instead.

"Tell me. If the situation were reversed, would you approve of me dating your daughter?" Emerson asked, cocking his head a little to the side.

"That's all I need to know about you," Emerson replied coolly, giving Percy a false smile. He was just as stubborn as Daphne was, if not more so. "Now, tell me something else. What does your family think of her? Certainly she wasn't welcomed with open arms since I am, as you say, a Death Eater."

"Most family does not hold any sort of prejudice against her. They understand they did nothing wrong, during the war, though her family name is associated with negativity. She has already met with my family at a couple of events, and there has been nothing said against her, that I know of. Had Emerson not been so prejudiced against Percy for the events of the war, he would have found all of his responses to be acceptable. He may have even liked him, as much as any father could like his daughter's boyfriend. At least Evelyn Greengrass was not so blinded by grudges.

"And what are your intentions with her?"

Right after Percy answered, Emerson looked very much like he was going to vomit all over the table, and a loud gasp was heard for out in the hallway. Daphne had gone out there at one point when her father began to annoy her, and she had eavesdropped just out of sight.

"No! Absolutely not! I forbid it!" Emerson said, his face turning a nasty shade of red. "You do not have my permission." That might have held some weight if he were not in prison, but with Emerson locked away in the North Sea, Evelyn was the head of the Greengrass family.

Daphne Weasley just sounded so... horrible! And ginger grandchildren! Emerson did not want ginger grandchildren! After a moment he stopped looking so ill, and was now looking like he wanted to break through the bars and strangle Percy.

At first, Percy quickly looked over his shoulder to see who had gasped, and he was slightly embarrassed that Daphne had been listening in on their conversation. The edges of his ears blushed a deep red and he returned around to Emerson, but that wasn't any better. At all. He remained perfectly quiet and calm the whole time Emerson ranted, knowing that there was nothing he could do behind the protective shield. Besides, the more angry he got, the worse off it would be for him, and so he was only digging his own grave.

When at last Emerson settled down, Percy replied, calmly, "That decision is for Daphne to make."

"You haven't yet figured out that Daphne has no idea what's best for her?" Emerson leaned forward, his face merely inches from the bars, and his tone was like ice. "That she makes her decisions without giving one moment's thought to the repercussions?" A pause. "Do you really like that if you married her, that she would still be happy with you in five years? Maybe even one year? Her relationships never last very long, you know. Maybe only a few months, at the most..."

Percy narrowed his eyes at Emerson, remaining firm. "You're incorrect, Mr Greengrass. I believe she has excellent decision making skills. It's more likely that you know little if nothing about the woman your daughter has become. I don't know what the future holds, and neither do you. But I, for one, am willing to take the risk, because that is what love is about."

Emerson rolled his eyes at the 'love' comment, not believing that Percy and Daphne could possibly love one another. He was trying to convince himself that this was just another of his daughter's phases, and he was hoping it would pass soon. Percy really rubbed him the wrong way.

"Well, for your sake, I hope you can make her happy," Emerson said, sounding very much like he doubted that Percy could.

The guard who had escorted Emerson in popped his head into the doorway to tell them that they had only five minutes left, and as soon as she heard it, Daphne reentered the room, looking a little annoyed, a little pleased, and a lot satisfied.

Percy felt as though he didn't need to reply to Emerson again; of course he could make her happy, and he wasn't even going to acknowledge the skepticism with an answer. Percy rose from his seat when Daphne entered, held her hand and kissed her briefly upon the cheek.

"Would you like for me to step out for a bit to speak with your father, alone? Or shall I stay?"

"Step outside, please," Daphne answered, looking at Percy and looking at her father. She was still looking very satisfied, grinning in a kind of devious way, like she had just won something by cheating.

Daphne took her hand back and went to sit in the seat Percy had just vacated. As soon as he saw Percy step out of the room, Emerson bean trying to sway Daphne in another direction, mentioning 'that Quidditch man she used to date' and that 'wonderful Frenchman'. In truth, Emerson hated them both, even though he had met neither, but to him they were both better than Percy. Daphne would have none of it, though, and she could be heard saying, "Oh, please, daddy, do calm yourself before you have a stroke."

When the five minutes was up, the two Greengrass's said their goodbyes and 'I love you's, with Emerson making Daphne promise than she would visit him again soon, and warning her to 'Be careful'.

Daphne walked through the doorway, still grinning. "He's so adorable," she said to Percy, giggling a little. Despite the argument between her boyfriend and her father, Daphne was quite pleased with how it had turned out.

Unlike Daphne, Percy resisted listening into their private conversation. Irritated? Yes, but he'd get over it. He also wanted to hex Emerson, but supposed being locked up in Azkaban for life was punishment enough. He was in there for life, wasn't he? Percy couldn't remember at the moment, but decided to check to make sure and hope that there was no chance of parole.

Joining Daphne's side as they were escorted by a guard down the hall to the exit, Percy remained stoic. "Adorable is not the word I would've used to describe him, but he is your father." He offered his arm for her to hold as they walked. "I hope you won't be too terribly upset if I say that I don't like him."

"He was a bit cranky today." Daphne took Percy's arm, holding onto it happily as they walked. "He's usually wonderful." And in Daphne's head, that was true. She didn't know Emerson Greengrass as a Death Eater. To Daphne, he would always just be 'daddy'. "I'm sure that if you had met him before the war that you would have loved him."

Percy glanced over at Daphne, not sure if she was really joking or not, and getting the feeling that she wasn't, opted not to say anything further about her father. Clearly, she was attached and possibly couldn't see his faults through the eyes of a daughter's love.

"I doubt that would be the case," Percy replied, soberly. "I was still a Weasley before the war."

Percy still hadn't received his items from the guard. He stood there and watched Daphne walk away, but as stubborn as he was, he made the decision to follow after her or call for her: if she couldn't be bothered to wait for him, then let her go. She was being irrational because she was upset about her father in prison, that Percy knew, and so he didn't take her actions personally.
