Supernatural (Dean&Sam, gen) [week 1 - prompt 5]
Title: Countdown
Author: kairiku
Rating: PG-13.
Warnings: Spoilers for season 2.
Word Count: 440
Summary: Every night, Dean dreams of Sam, yellow-eyed and murdering innocent people.
Author's Notes: I feel horrible for writing this. :(
Dean has two hundred seventy-seven days to live.
Dean has two hundred seventy-seven days to live, and Sam has hit a wall in his research, the research he's doing in secret because if Dean knew, he'd never let Sam continue. He'd remind Sam that the demon had said that if he tried anything, Sam would drop dead again.
He was taking this dying thing bizarrely well.
They still hunt - a poltergeist in Clifton Heights, a leszy up near Hawkeye Point - but Dean is too careful when it comes to Sam's safety. Sometimes Dean gets hurt because he was looking after Sam and not himself.
Sam thinks that this will drive him crazy well before Dean's year is up.
--
Dean decided months ago that there's no use fighting what's going to happen to him- his life for Sam's is more than equal.
But Sam refuses to give up, though Dean's told him to drop it more than once. I won't, he says every time. Damn it, Dean, we're all we've got. I won't let you die.
He tries his hardest not to think about the yellow-eyed demon's parting words, tries not to think about what Dad had made him promise, but every night, Dean dreams of Sam, yellow-eyed and murdering innocent people.
His only regret is that he won't be there if something happens to Sam.
--
It's a Wednesday night (Dean has two hundred fifty-nine days left to live), and they're in a cheap motel room, recovering from a particularly nasty job (that bitch of a ghost had had it in for Dean, Sam swears) when it starts.
One minute, Sam is lying on his bed, nearly asleep, and the next, he's about to walk out the door, and Dean is saying, "What the hell, Sammy?"
Sam shakes his head to clear it. "What just happened?"
"You just ignored me and nearly walked out the door is what happened. You okay, man?" He can hear the worry in Dean's voice, and he hates it.
"Yeah, I'm fine," he says. "I'm just tired."
Dean doesn't say anything else, but Sam is sure that Dean is thinking the same thing he is.
--
Two hundred forty-three days left.
(He'll find something. Some way to save Dean. He has to.)
--
Another case, another city, another motel room. It's all the same now. They all blur together. Sam is hunched over his computer, searching for the identity of the ghost haunting City Hall.
He looks up at Dean, and his eyes are yellow.
Dean stares. He tries his hardest to wake up.
But this time, it's no dream.
The monster (it's not Sam, damn it) speaks with Sam's voice.
"How's it feel to be killed by the person you would've died to save, Dean?"
