Digital Devil Saga (Embryon) [week 4, prompt 5]
Title: Silent Star
Author: Sister Coyote
Rating: Worksafe
Word Count: 500
Summary: "Also," Heat said, "this is the worst fucking green room I've ever -- "
"What's got 'im in such a foul mood?" Cielo asked, watching Heat kick the scuffed table.
Argilla reached over the back of the beat-up couch to pull a copy of NME out from where Heat had stuffed it between the couch cushions. She wordlessly flipped it so Cielo could read the cover, which said, "Serph: Embryon's Silent Star," complete with a three-quarter shot of their lead guitarist, glowing silver under the stagelights, Varna's strings under his fingers.
Cielo put a hand on the back of the couch and vaulted over it to sit next to Heat. "Cheer up, man," he said. "You're de lead vocalist, and you got de cover of Tiger Beat."
Heat snarled. Gale looked up from tuning his bass and said, dryly, "I don't think that's going to cheer him up."
"I don't see why not." Argilla leaned over a little more to lick Heat's earlobe. "He seems to like it when the girls throw themselves at him."
"Yeah?" Heat said. "So do you. At least, you weren't complaining after that time Maribel opened for us and that chick -- "
"See?" Argilla said. "And I'm never going to be on the cover of Tiger Beat, but you don't hear me whining about it." There was a grin in her voice.
"Also," Heat said, "this is the worst fucking green room I've ever -- "
The door swung open, interrupting him. Sera was all bright silver in her short dress, too sweet-voiced by half for such a smoky and ratty room. "Are we ready? We're on in five."
"Dat depends where our 'silent star' got to," Cielo said, flipping one of the sticks of his drums end over end and catching it behind his back.
"Serph's not here? We'd better go get him." Sera smoothed her skirt down with the flats of her hands. Heat grumbled. Sera sat down next to him on the couch and said, "Come on, please? Help me find him?"
Heat had fucked pretty much everyone in the band one time or another, Argilla knew -- not that she was complaining, and anyway they all did it -- but it was Sera he couldn't say no to. She counted down silently in her head: five, four, three, two...
"All right."
Sera beamed and pulled him to his feet. "I think he was out...."
But in the short corridor to the stage they found him, sleek in the grey leather they all -- except Sera -- wore, holding Varna with the delicate care usually lavished on living creatures. Argilla knew how he felt. It wasn't nearly as common to name a keyboard as a guitar, but still she felt a lot the same way about Prithvi.
Serph held out a hand as if to say Ready?. She was; they all were; the knowledge that a few hundred people were out there waiting for them filled her with a fizzling empty hunger. They followed him out into the bright lights and the roar of the crowd.
