Prince of Tennis (Tezuka/Fuji) [week 1 - prompt 2]
Title: Surprise
Author: ketchupblood
Word Count: Almost 700
Summary: Tezuka isn't surprised when Fuji shows up at three in the morning anymore.
Author's Notes: It's a failure as a pain!fic, but there is a bit of pain, I suppose.
When Tezuka answered his door at three in the morning, he was not surprised to see Fuji standing there, looking for all the world as if he were visiting on a leisurely Sunday afternoon. He stepped aside and let Fuji in and closed the door against the cold. Fuji walked right into the small kitchen and shrugged his coat off. As he draped it over a chair, he said with a smile that told nothing, "Mika wants a divorce."
That didn't surprise Tezuka either. Not because Fuji Mika had wanted a divorce before, though she probably had, but because he was no longer surprised when Fuji turned up at his door at three in the morning.
"She says that I don't spend any time with her anymore and I spend more time with my camera than I do at home." Fuji walked over to the freezer and grabbed the carton of ice cream that Tezuka had never touched but kept because Fuji seemed to want chocolate ice cream whenever he was upset.
"Bring two bowls, Fuji." Tezuka sat down in a chair, preparing himself for going through the next day on three hours of sleep. Fuji looked like he needed to talk and Tezuka knew that if Fuji were going to talk, he wouldn't be allowed to return to bed.
Fuji gave him a strange look and helped himself to two spoons. Then he plopped down onto another chair, handed one to Tezuka, and said, "I think I should be more upset than this."
Tezuka dug his spoon into the carton of ice cream which was surprisingly soft. He doubted that Fuji expected him to actually respond and carry any part of the conversation. His assumption was not only from knowing Fuji, but Fuji had done this before. Tezuka supposed that Fuji would have been more than happy to talk to a brick wall if that weren't eccentric even for him.
"I'm even a bit relieved." Fuji continued. "I think I've actually been waiting for her to want a divorce, since I would lose everything if I pushed for one because of the prenuptials."
Tezuka didn't say that he disapproved. Fuji probably already knew that and Tezuka knew that Fuji likely didn't care much if he approved or not. Fuji had not cared before and he wouldn't likely start now, though Tezuka did allow himself to hope every once in a while that Fuji might let himself conform to the Japanese model of a good citizen.
His disapproval must have shown on his face then, something that it did not often do when he was awake enough to control his facial muscles. Perhaps it was obvious enough that even Fuji couldn't ignore it or perhaps Fuji really wanted to talk right then, Tezuka didn't know, but Fuji said, "Don't look at me like that, Tezuka. I really do... I really did like her, you know. I'm just so tired of always bickering. I guess..."
Fuji paused to shovel ice cream into his mouth. Tezuka wondered if he was feeling embarrassed or awkward, right then, talking about something as personal as this to someone as... silent as Tezuka. But then he swallowed the ice cream and continued, "I guess she just doesn't love me enough to understand what I do and I don't think I love her, but if I did then I don't love her enough to stop doing what I do. It's just too much work, you know, to keep it going. I don't even like going home anymore because she's just going to yell, and I guess that makes her yell more."
Tezuka put his spoon down. The ice cream would have to be worked off sometime and he wasn't in the mood for a long morning workout. He didn't care much for ice cream to begin with anyways.
"Hey..." Fuji, for the first time since he started talking, looked straight at Tezuka. "I'm really sorry for bothering you like this."
Tezuka was a little surprised by that. Fuji had never apologized before. Still, he nodded his acceptance of the apology and Fuji started again.
"Yuuta told me this would happen, too..."
