He'd put this off for as long as possible and avoiding Nyota had come to a point where even he believed it to be illogical and childish. He cared for the younger woman. If he were being completely honest with himself he'd have to admit that he loved her. It had gone way past pure fascination long ago. It was no longer about understanding human females or exploring their differences. It had turned into something more and Spock had been helpless to stop it. He'd tried though. Assigning her to the Faragut instead of the Enterprise had been a last ditch effort to distance himself from her. He'd all ready been betrothed, afterall. What he had with Nyota couldn't last. It was doomed, it'd always been doomed, and through his connection with T'Pring he could hear her musical, taunting laughter, her sneering mocking mind voice chiding him for allowing himself to become so attached to a fraile human. He ignored her as much as he could when he could but, as always, T'Pring had refused to be silent. She'd kept up her constant chatter... until Nero silenced her forever. It was disorienting to say the least. Spock's mind had been a place of constant noise, constant chatter for as long as he could remember. To have the background noise so suddenly silenced, to know his mother's and his betrothed's voices were among them, it had left him in a state of shock. He'd pushed Nyota away, not because he wanted to but because he had to. He needed time to adjust and to keep himself moving, he couldn't lean on her. What was left of his people and the crew of the Enterprise were depending on him.
Things were only slightly different this time. The shift from their world to this one had still been disorienting but he supposed it was something that he'd have to get used to in order to remain part of the crew. If he elder counterpart could be believed this sort of thing was an all too common occurence. He'd taken it in his stride... until he realized that, once again, his mind was filled with a great silence. No matter how he tried to reach out to the Vulcan refugees, to his father, to his counterpart, and any of the other bonds which had remained and sustained him and his people after the fall of Vulcan he could not. There was nothing to cling to, nothing to call out to. All of those bonds had been broken. His elder counterpart had survived things like this thanks to the bond he shared with Jim Kirk. Spock wasn't that close to his Jim or Dr. McCoy so he'd been unaware of their presence within this world and had had nothing to sustain him. Slowly but surely the lack of a bond began to take it's toll and he began to weaken. By the time he and Jim had found one another he was in a poor state but had attempted not to show it. The Captain had enough to worry about. What was the ailment of one crew member when the Enterprise was missing its Captain?
Since then he'd managed to secure weaker bonds with the Captain and the Doctor without their knowledge or consent. He knew it wasn't proper but he couldn't explain this to either of them nor could he allow himself to simply cease funtioning due to his own illogical stubbornness and Vulcan pride. The bonds, however, only lasted as long as the two of them were within a certain radius. He'd lost track of the Doctor a few days after his arrival and Jim's own curiosity had him within range and out (which normally left Spock panicked) frequently. He needed something more permanent, someone who was willing to be bonded in some form with him. He wasn't about to ask Uhura to agree to something so incredulous but he knew being around her would put his mind at ease and help him come to terms with just what he needed to relate to both his Captain and her. They deserved that much. Leaving the apartment he currently shared with Jim, he wandered the hall with no real direction hoping that Uhura was waiting for him. His condition had left him slightly absent minded and he hadn't thought to ask for her exact location or directions.
