Pub night was a welcome distraction from the fact that Allegra was a little upset about missing her sister's 17th birthday -- not that she was ready to admit it, considering how bitchy Talia had been towards her lately. So when she'd been slipped an extra drink ticket, she wasted little time in ensuring it was checked in for a good bottle of strawberry flavoured Swedish cider. She sipped, enjoying the pleasant buzz she was feeling, and rest her spare hand gently on Caleb's knee. "You know," she indicated towards Claudia and Ashton with the neck of her bottle, their heads bowed together as they competed with the jukebox to be heard a few paces away from her table. "My best friend told me that she would, hypothetically, sleep with yours. Isn't that hilarious?" “Oh yeah?” Caleb asked, arm draped around her shoulders, distracted by something across the room and only half paying attention, But then what she’d said struck him and he looked at her, intrigued. “Wait, what?” he asked, glancing over at the two of them, and then back at Allegra. “Claudia wants to sleep with Ashton?” "Well, hypothetically," Allegra explained, still watching their friends, a glint of amusement in her eyes. “Interesting,” Caleb said, a bit of a glint in his eye. He wasn’t entirely sure what was with all the ‘hypotheticals’ but he didn’t really think to ask, instead watching Ashton and Claudia again. Two people he liked a lot, thought were fun, nice, good people. And while he didn’t know specifically if Ashton was interested in Claudia back, he could see it working. “They’d be good together, actually. Don’t you think?” "What?" She immediately began to regret saying anything at all -- of course Caleb would seriously contemplate matchmaking. "It was just meant to be a funny thing, like ha ha ha, not like that!" “But even so,” Caleb said, shaking his head a little dismissively. “They would be, right? I mean, they’re both great people, both single, they’re already friends, she already wants to sleep with him... I don’t know about him, but I bet I could get it out of him - I mean, that’s kind of the perfect start to a relationship.” "But what if she doesn't want one?" “Did she tell you she didn’t want one?” Caleb asked, raising his eyebrows. “I mean, she’s not anti-relationships or anything, right?” Allegra opened her mouth to reply, and then promptly closed it again as a frown crossed her features. She didn't remember what Claudia had said, though she thought she wasn't looking. And then there was Jason, and... Okay, maybe she was a little too tipsy to logically work this out. "She likes relationships, but Jason!" “Are she and Jason still... she and Jason?” Caleb asked, a little doubtful. Yes they’d slept together over Christmas, but that didn’t mean they were a relationship, exactly. And long distance relationships with no end in sight were hard - Caleb got that, and that sometimes a clean break made it easier. "No," Allegra acquiesced, though her frown lingered. "I mean, I'm all for her having some fun and all, but." Was Ashton someone you could just have fun with? And Claudia wasn't over Jason, if Christmas was anything to go by. “But my best friend isn’t good enough for your best friend, is that it?” Caleb said, teasing. If Allegra wanted to object, she missed the opportunity to do so, for at that moment Ashton and Claudia returned to the table. "You're really not funny," she said instead. “Don’t worry,” Claudia addressed Caleb as she took a seat at their table, despite not knowing what they were talking about (thankfully), “Allegra always says I’m not funny too. I think that she just needs a better sense of humour.” Ashton rose both of his hands in the air defensively, though half-heartedly. “I’m taking no part of this conversation,” he said with a slight chuckle, taking a seat among his friends. "See? Claudia thinks I'm funny," Caleb said to Allegra, giving her a mischievous grin. "Enjoying pub night?" "Claudia doesn't know what you said!" Allegra protested. "And I'm sure Ashton thinks I have a great sense of humour, right?" She turned to the neutral party entreatingly, despite his earlier attempt to remain Switzerland. Ashton looked rather helplessly from Caleb to Claudia before shrugging rather defeatedly, though a gentle smile remained. "So. Pub night," he said obviously, attempting to steer the conversation. “No different from most pub nights,” Claudia responded, “But it’s always a good part of the weekend.” She never thought she drunk that much, especially compared to her friends who were studying arts and who always got to go out on Thursday nights because they didn’t have 8am classes on Fridays but since coming to IVI she had definitely started to think that she had gone drinking more than she thought she had, three drinks once a week barely seeming like anything, especially once Swan Bonding night became alcohol free, compared to the multiple bars on campus and a street with a pub or cocktail bar on nearly every corner that she was used to having access to. "Wow, this conversation is boring," declared Allegra with her usual habit of saying what everyone else was thinking anyway. “You’re nothing if not blunt,” Caleb said, slightly distracted as he’d been paying attention to Ashton and Claudia, wondering if there was any attraction between them. He didn’t sense anything obvious, but there had to be something he was missing. “You guys want to go on a bike ride or something this week?” The weather had been a little cooler lately, so spending time outside wasn’t nearly as unattractive as it had been. “We could go on the later side, grab some food from the caf, make a.... an evening of it. Could be fun.” "Sure, sounds fun," Claudia agreed, completely unaware that Caleb was thinking in terms of a double date. It made sense for the four of them to hang out, they were all friends and if she had to hang out with Allegra and Caleb together then it was much better to have company other than them as well. Ashton was, also, easily suckered in. He didn’t echo Claudia’s words, but nodded in agreement. He enjoyed being outdoors, no matter how hot it was. The weather was pretty much the only thing familiar to him, despite still being in his home country. “Yeah, just let me know when.” Allegra opened her mouth, gaze skirting between Caleb, Claudia, Ashton and then Caleb again. And then she closed it again. If she said anything, she'd probably just embarrass the other two, and simultaneously have to admit to slipping up. Bad idea. So instead she took a log sip from her drink and hoped there wasn't some kind of hell for best friends who accidentally told their sappy boyfriends hypothetical answers to hypothetical questions. It was more trouble than it was worth. |
