WHO: Hailey, Claudia, Allegra
WHAT: Camp out birthday present
WHEN: BACKDATED to Friday, January 18th
WHERE: By the lake
WARNINGS: None!
STATUS: Completed
After everything that had been happening, Hailey hadn’t wanted a big celebration. It didn’t feel right to be happy and excited that she was another year older when so many of her peers had died. Birthdays had never been a huge thing for Hailey anyway - she usually liked to play hockey or something with her family or friends. This year was different. It wasn’t even winter, and truthfully Hailey didn’t even feel like it was her birthday. She was much happier playing games and enjoying her time with her friends than she would have enjoyed a bit party. Allegra and Claudia had other plans though, which Hailey had soon discovered. They’d planned a camping getaway sort of night by the lake. It was perfect, really. Hails couldn’t think of a better way to spend her birthday than out by the lake all night. A bonfire would really make the evening, but Hailey was pretty sure if the IVI staff saw a fire glowing their tent-out would get shut down immediately. “What has even been going on with you two lately?” Hailey asked, leaning her arms back into the sand. “I feel like we haven’t talked in months and it’s probably been like five days.” “Not much,” Claudia answered. It had taken a while to adjust to being back at IVI after their short break and recover from the emotionally draining kidnappings and deaths. “I’ve mostly been pre-reading for classes starting again,” she continued. As well as doing research on genetics, the “cure” re-sparking her interest in vol research, something she’d put aside in order to keep up with her real classes and all her club activities. “I can’t wait for Monday!” Things would not feel normal again until she was studying again. Though she was probably one of only a few who were excited for classes to resume. Done speaking she turned to look at Allegra so she knew it was her turn to answer Hailey’s question. "Oh, you know, organising memorials, hiding from feelings." Ignoring Jordana's existence, she added mentally, though since Hailey had not been privy to that particular comment exchange, Allegra decided it was best to not bring it up. Besides, Claudia would disapprove. "And not looking forward to class because I'm not-- Actually, no, I take that back. Cooking and coffee making!" A look of horror crossed Hailey’s face when Claudia mentioned pre-reading and not being able to wait for Monday. “You’re ridiculous,” she replied with a laugh. Hailey had figured Allegra was staying out of public due to everyone’s feelings. Caleb had seemed fine though, so Hailey really hadn’t been worried about Allegra. Her time had instead been worrying about herself and Hugo, and using Nathan as a distraction. “I wish I could say I was surprised. They actually accepted coffee making, Legs? I thought you were joking.” Hailey should have known better, though. "She should be joking," Claudia cut in, not one to keep her opinions on the subjects Allegra was taking to herself. Not that disapproving made much difference, Allegra seemed set on taking useless classes and, worse, potentially dragging Anthony in with her. "I don't even know how that is a class. Shouldn't it be possible to learn how to make coffee in one day?" Coming from the girl who most of the time couldn't even work half the appliances in the kitchen. Still, she didn't think it was something that required much skill or, more importantly, much brain power so it was therefore a pointless, waste of time class in her opinion. "If you want to do a short course at least do something useful like get your first aid certificate." Allegra rolled her eyes, they'd been over this before. "It's summer, if I have to study, it's going to be something pointless." She sipped at the bottle of coke she'd brought with her to the camp out and stared out into the lake. "Anyway, talking about studying when we don't have to go to class today is boring. It's a camp out! We should do something fun!" "She'll probably have to study all the different beans," Hailey joked to Claudia. Which sounded horrible, so hopefully that didn't happen. "Summer," Hailey muttered in a mock judgemental tone, "think you meant sauna." Hails wasn't entirely sure she was cut out for Australia, but at least twice a week there was ice hockey. "We should plan a new prank," Hailey suggested. She'd loved the previous two, it was time for a third. "It should probably be a nice prank," Claudia suggested. She hadn't been part of their previous pranks but she had recognised Allegra's handwriting on the post it notes they had left everywhere. "I'm think a lot of people are still a bit tense for other types of pranks." Understandably so considering a lot of them had been kidnapped. "The last one was a nice prank! Though I don't think it actually classifies as an actual prank," Allegra objected. "Maybe we should actually campaign to let the training animals out this time." "No, it wasn't really a prank," Hailey agreed. "That would be great, having all the animals running loose." It wasn't often that Hailey considered having a different power, but when they were planning pranks Hailey always thought about how other powers could be helpful. "It'd be cool if we could dye all the food purple or something," Hailey suggested, albeit unrealistically. “That could be unsafe for the animals,” Claudia pointed out not caring if it ruined their prank plan. This was probably why she wasn’t usually included in pranks. “There’s just so many people with unpredictable powers and I wouldn’t want any animals to get hurt.” Purple food was safer at least, as long as no one was allergic to food dye. “We could add baking soda to tomato sauce bottles in the caf so the explode like a volcano if anyone uses them,” she suggested, deciding using science was the best way to prank. "I don't think they should be let out loose! Just let out occasionally supervised or whatever. I'm sure students wouldn't mind helping taking care of them as part of their independent studies," Allegra objected before returning her attention to actually thinking of a prank. "Anyway, tomato sauce volcanoes do sound fun -- though I thought you said we shouldn't be mean." She grinned, eyes twinkling in amusement as she teased Claudia and sipped from her bottle of coke again. “Unsafe? Animals live in the wild!” Hailey objected, although their campus could hardly be considered the ‘wild’. Even if without the buildings it was pretty similar to the red sand Outback. Hails was used to trees and vegetation and hiding places, she really had no idea what animals would do out here. “What? Baking soda in tomato sauce makes explosions? Like mentos in pop? What about ketchup?” Hailey’s questions came out in a rush, as the ideas in her head started expanding and taking over. “How do you know this? Oh my god we are so doing this!” "There aren't hundreds of super powered teenagers and twenty years old in the wild," Claudia countered, Just because everyone was learning to control their powers didn't mean accidents couldn't still happen. Or, worse, someone might want to try their powers out on the animals, though Claudia liked to think that no one would actually do that. "Ketchup is the same as tomato sauce," Claudia answered, confused by that question because of the different word usages between Australia and Canada. "Why wouldn't I know this? It's a chemical reaction. Tomato sauce is acidic so it reacts with the bicarb," she explained, though her tone made it clear that she thought the answer should have been obvious. "It's not mean, just a little messy." "Claudia forgets that not everyone pays attention to science," Allegra translated so that Hailey didn't feel like an idiot. "Anyway, let's think about pranking later. I want to play a game." “Biwhat?” Hailey said immediately, although she really didn’t want a long winded explanation or an eyeroll from Claudia. She had dropped anything ‘chemistry’ related after grade ten, when general science was no longer mandatory. She’d taken biology at least, though that was 95% because of the baby pig dissection. “This prank sounds good to me anyways, we’ll figure specifics later.” The girls chattered back and forth until the decision of playing truth was made. Instead of picking Claudia or Allegra, Hailey decided to come up with questions for them both. “Claudia, if you could sleep with three guys here - who would they be? And Legs, ummm I’m not asking anything about Caleb because I have to train with him everyday - so, you have 24 hours to live and you’re not at IVI. What do you do?” Claudia was a little disappointed that Hailey had kept talking before she had a chance to explain the chemical composition of sodium bicarbonate, though in the end she decided it was for the best since she didn’t have any paper to draw it out for her properly. She could explain it to her later with all the proper diagrams! “Why do I have to be sleeping with three guys?” Claudia responded, instead of answering the question. She liked to think she wasn’t sleeping with anyone at IVI by choice, not because she couldn’t sleep with anyone. “But if I had to,” she started, pausing again to think about what her answer was. This wasn’t something she spent much time thinking about normally so no names immediately jumped to her head and, unlike some people who might go for the people they thought were best looking or were likely to be better in bed than others (especially at a school where some powers really could help with that), that wasn’t Claudia’s top priority even if this was only for a hypothetical causal thing. “Ashton and Noah because I trust them and Connor because his power means all he has to do is read an article on something I’m interested in and we’d be able to have intelligent conversation about it.” "So you want to have sex with Connor's mind?" Allegra interjected with a laugh. "Poor guy. Used for his power even hypothetically. And you could hook up with any of those three easily, I'm sure. I mean, not that you heard it from me, but at least one of them is attracted to you." “You know I don’t do hookups,” Claudia responded. Seeing as Allegra now seemed to agree that being in a relationship was better and Hailey that casual sex wasn’t as great as it sounded she didn’t really know why they were discussing this. Her opinion had already been proven right! “Who though?” she couldn’t help but ask even if she didn’t think it really mattered. "Guess," Allegra teased, smirking. There were only three people to choose from which made it easier, at least, but Allegra hung out with all of them so that didn’t help cut it down at all. “Once Noah sent me a message meant for Anthony that was about me being alright looking,” she recalled after some consideration. She didn’t want to assume that any of them were attracted to her but if she had to guess then he was the one there was most evidence for. "Bingo," was the slightly surprised reply at how quickly Claudia managed to answer. "He did? Are you sure it was a mistake? Sometimes people do those and call them 'mistakes.'" “I don’t think Noah would do that,” she answered, “But anyway, you have to answer your question.” "Fine, fine," Allegra said dismissively, though she didn't really think Noah would either. "Anyway, I would probably get laid, go to my favourite cafe with my family, go to the beach, swim, stuff like that. Play laser tag! I don't know, things I love." “Hang out with Claudia,” Claudia added for Allegra. If her best friend was going to die then she wanted to spend time with her before it happened. Which, hopefully it wouldn’t actually, there had been enough deaths lately. ‘And Hailey,” she added hastily, not wanting their friend to feel left out. “Okay, your turn,” she addressed Hailey. “If you had to swap powers with someone, what power would you want?” Hailey remained silent as Claudia and Allegra bantered back and forth. She smiled at their conversation, but was perfectly fine to wait until the conversation circled back to her. “Ugh, really? That’s like the hardest question ever. Caleb’s would be cool to try everything out, but it wouldn’t be great if no one was around. Chris’s freeze frame thing is cool. I wouldn’t mind being able to make snow or ice on command and just roll around in it here! I like the idea of being able to use any weapon ever too. Frig, I don’t know. We should play a would you rather game with powers!” "I like Jack's," Allegra answered quickly without needing to be prompted. "We had this power swap session before the break and I got to play around with it. It was really fun. Other than that, maybe Mason's?" "Kyungmi's." Claudia didn't need to think about it either, she loved her own power but was definitely jealous of Kyungmi's. She wished she could have both hers and Kyungmi's. There were other powers she thought were cool, like Leona's, but Kyungmi's was the only one she could think that she really wanted. Then maybe Ophelia's so she never had to mourn her dead pets. "Okay," she said, deciding to start the game Hailey had suggested, "Would you rather..." |
