WHO: Val and Vanessa
WHAT: Val knows how to cheer people up!
WHEN: Sometime after everyone gets back to IVI, Jan 6
WHERE: IVI
STATUS: Complete
The students had begun to return to IVI, filling up the previously almost empty school, making it feel a little more normal. There were differences though. It still wasn't as loud as it had been before break, there were no games or fun activities and a lot of the usual chatter had been replaced with crying. Crying with relief that people had returned, grief for those lost, tears shed at the memories of what had happened while kidnapped and probably even some tears of sheer exhaustion after everything everyone had been through. It wasn't the same but Vanessa still liked it a whole lot more than before people had returned. She had started working her way through her friends that had been in Europe or America, sort of to check on them and their well being but more selfishly for herself, to make sure they were happy to see her and that they were really her friends. She gave a small smile as she approached Val. "W-B," she spelt out, welcoming back her friend. Val was also happy to be back at school. Doria was here, Lydie was here, and Shannon were here and while everyone was still sad, it felt better to have everyone around her than it did when it was just her and Lydie (not that there was anything wrong with Lydie) in Europe. She was sad for the people who had lost someone and she even quietly mourned the deceased but she didn’t want to contribute to their grief - it felt intrusive. She didn’t know the dead nearly as much as some others did and even though Erik was her teammate she knew that there those who hurt more than she did. “Hey bb,” she said, saying the letters instead of the word. She linked her arm with Vanessa. “It’s so good to see your beautiful face.” Her smile widened at Val’s compliment and she replied with “Like,” a word she felt she hadn’t said nearly enough lately. This felt almost normal. She could pretend both of them had just got back from vacation and were seeing each other for the first time, push all thoughts of the kidnapping to the back of her mind so she could move on with her life. Except she couldn’t really, the losses would be so obvious, every day in training Marine would be gone, reminding her of everything that happened. “TY bb,” she said, needing to keep talking before she was overwhelmed with sad thoughts. “It’s good to see your beautiful face too.” “You’re too good to me,” Val told her friend, leaning her head against her friend’s. Physical affection came as naturally to Val as breathing, why keep your distance anyway? She didn’t understand people who minded and often and usually invaded their personal space anyway. “You look great.” Especially since you were kidnapped. “You know what we should do one night?” Val asked, not really wanting to bring up all the bad things that had happened. “Spa night. To relax, even if there’s just a few of us.” She loved that Val didn't bring up the kidnapping at all, the physical contact was comfort enough without needing to talk. "Yes," Vanessa agreed, as enthusiastically as she could muster. Spa night sounded perfect. "My nails are totes gross," she said, holding up her hand on the arm that wasn't linked with Val's. She hadn't painted them since before the kidnappings, the polish worn and chipped. "And then after spa stuff finishes watching movies together," she suggested. "We can have a sleep over in one of the lounges!" “Oh my god perfect idea,” Val said grinning. “We can watch happy movies.” She glanced at Vanessa’s nails. “Well I think those can’t wait we will totes have to go take care of those right now.” It was the least she could do and she was glad that she was here with her friend and they could do normal things that they normally did and try to get things back to how they were supposed to be. Vanessa grinned again, Val's own smile contagious. Happy movies sounded perfect but not as perfect as fixing up her nails immediately. Obvi part of the reason she wasn't feeling totes herself was that her nails were gross, her vanity never usually letting them get that bad. Val would help her fix them and things would be almost all better. "I want them the be sparkly," she decided. Sparkles could totes fix things. “Oh I have this really great purple sparkly polish,” Val said. “And purple is totes the color of royalty right?” There was Vanessa’s smile - the smile that in Val’s not so humble opinion should always be there. They were safe and the deaths were sad, but Vanessa had been through enough with getting kidnapped. Val turned them to head towards her room. “And I have the greatest clothes from Christmas, you totes have to see them.” At the mention of clothes Vanessa's thought went quickly back to home, to all the new summer clothes she'd found on sale at the mall. The might have been last season's stuff that all the shops were struggling to sell in the cold weather but Australia was a season behind anyway. She hadn't had a chance to pack them though, hadn't had a chance to pack anything. The kidnapping affected everything, even in the smallest, seemingly unimportant ways. She would have to get her parents to post her everything now. "You can give me a fashion show while my nails dry," she told her friend as they approached the room. It was the perfect way to spend the day. “Totally and you can borrow whatever you want,” Val said. She was always fine with people borrowing her clothes so long as they returned them - she did have two sisters that were the same size as her, she was used to sharing. She hoped maybe her parents had managed to get the leather boots she had wanted when they’d gone shopping and sent them to her. “This is going to be so fun.” "Bb you are the best," Vanessa said sincerely, thankful that she had such great friends, especially in times like these. It made jerks like Jesse and Devon easier to handle. "You can borrow anything of mine too," she offered, wanting to return the favor. She never shared with her own sister, as much as she begged, but never had any problem lending or swapping clothes with her friends. "We will be the best dressed at IVI!" “You are the best,” Val said, breaking her linked arms with Vanessa just to unlock her door. She let her friend into the room and went to find her nail stuff. “We are totes always the best dressed at IVI because everyone is nice enough to share clothes.” With such a small allowance, Val would have gotten tired of the clothes she had but her friends were nice enough to share, so it was like she constantly had new things. And she could try clothes she wouldn’t normally. Once she’d found her nail kit, she sat down next to Vanessa and took her hand. “You’re nails are going to look great.” |
