WHO: Claudia Corbett & Allegra Hawke
WHAT: Reunite!
WHEN: 6 Jan, right after Allegra gets back.
WHERE: Allegra's room.
WARNINGS: None.
STATUS: Complete.
Upon hearing the news that everyone was returning to IVI Claudia had begun working out how long it would be before Allegra was back. She’d calculated the flight time, converted the time zones and then taken a few hours off for any mistakes she might have made in her tired state, preferring to be early than to be late. As a result she’d been sitting outside of Allegra’s room for a while, had even briefly dozed off. The idea that Allegra might not want to see her straight away, might want to sleep or shower or whatever else first hadn’t even crossed her mind. She hadn’t seen her best friend since the first day in the Australian safehouse and a text here and there wasn’t the same as seeing her every day. Allegra might not have been one of the kidnapped ones but Claudia worried just the same. She knew what her emotions had been like during this whole time, that was enough to give her an idea of what a room full of scared, angry, grieving, stressed, worried people would be like for Allegra. She knew her friend wouldn’t be fine. The footsteps along the hall alerted her to her presence and she jumped up off the floor, moving quicker than she had in days. She herself was still feeling a mixture of negative emotions but at least now there was some positive mixed in. The alive students had all been rescued, the kidnapping was over and the sight of her best friend filled her with relief more than anything. Claudia pulled her into a hug, wordlessly wrapping her arms tightly around her. "Hey," Allegra managed weakly, her voice muffled by Claudia's hair as she tucked her arms tightly around her frame. They were safe, they were both safe, everything would be -- well. if not okay, at least not worse. "Missed you." “Missed you too,” Claudia replied, not willing to let go of her friend yet. Since the kidnappings she’d had friends comforting her, Nathan at the safehouse, Hailey and Mae at IVI for distraction, but now Allegra was back Claudia felt it was her turn to look out for someone else. “Do you want anything? Tea? I can make you tea,” she offered. "Peppermint would be great, actually," Allegra said gratefully, still wrapped up in her friend's embrace. Even after all this was over, her nerves were still a little frayed and as Claudia refused to let go, she began to sniffle a little, unwanted tears pricking at her eyes. It could have been her. It could have been Claudia. Or Caleb. It could have been Mette or Sara or Jack that they'd lost. She was going to let go, going to go fetch the tea, one of the few things Claudia could make in the kitchen, but at the sound of Allegra’s sniffles she clung to her tighter. Tea could wait. “What’s wrong?” she asked, realising how stupid the question the was the second it let her mouth. The list of what was wrong could probably go on forever. "We couldn't-- We couldn't bring everyone back and I'm just so glad you're okay." The two phrases hardly made sense together in the same sentence, but in her exhaustion and overwhelming feelings of, well, feelings, Allegra didn't care. "I'm so glad you're okay too," Claudia replied. There had been deaths and injuries and probably plenty of emotional scarring but that wasn't so overwhelming to deal with now she knew Allegra was safe. She pressed a kiss to her best friend's cheek and then finally let go of her. "I'm going to go and get your tea and then I'll be back. I'm okay and you're okay so it's going to be okay, okay?" Allegra nodded and sat on the edge of her bed, not really sure what else to do at this stage other than wipe her eyes. "Okay," she replied, her voice dull and tired. "It's going to be okay." |
