WHO: Caleb Tate & Allegra Hawke
WHAT: A shell-shocked Caleb and a worried Allegra reunited after the rescue.
WHEN: 4 December, post rescue.
WHERE: Europe safe house.
WARNINGS: None.
STATUS: Complete.
Numb. Caleb was mostly numb. Seeing Myra get shot, finding out about Mal and Marine, seeing Mette and Padraig - the only survivors of a group of seven. Seven. Five of them killed - he couldn’t even wrap his mind around numbers like that. Of his classmates. As they were transported back to the military base he sat, mostly shell-shocked. Watching the other people, wondering if they were numb, too. Wondering how long it would be for Mette to feel anything, really, without her powers. Wondering how long it would take to be normal. What was normal, anyway? But he’d made it out, and in one piece, too. Not everyone had been so lucky. He was probably being dramatic, overthinking things, making too big a deal out of it. He’d gotten through this completely unscathed - who was he to worry about being normal? He had no reason not to be - he hadn’t been kidnapped, he’d lost friends, but not a best friend, not a relative, not Allegra. He hadn’t even so much as gotten a scrape in the two firefights he’d been in. He had no reason, really, to be so affected. He should be fine. The survivors -- two of seven -- and the injured were taken away before Allegra had the chance to sight them. Since she didn't have a hope of seeing Mette now that she'd been rescued, she sought for the next face she was most desperate to see. "Caleb!" “Ally,” he said, wrapping his arms around her instinctively. “I’m fine,” he told her, speaking of the physical only, of course. “Mette’s in one piece too. Pad also. And they said that none of the other injuries were life threatening.” Focusing on the others was easier than focusing on himself, he thought, still numb. “They’re taking the... the bodies somewhere else, though, I think.” She really wanted to kiss him, grateful he'd emerged unscathed. There were bullets again. People had been shot and another had died. On second thoughts, she gave in to her former inclination and kissed him anyway. He didn't feel fine to her, he felt shocked, rattled, numb. But she didn't have the energy to point it out to him, simply too relieved he'd made it out of the entire nightmare without any serious injury. "Thank you. For what you did out there." Caleb returned the kiss, and finally felt something other than nothing. He nodded at her thanks, not entirely willing to internalize it. He wasn’t entirely sure what he’d done, really. He didn’t quite remember. “Mette - I mean, I think they’re still unsure about her powers, but physically, I think she’s okay,” he repeated, knowing that she was one of Allegra’s main concerns. Her teammate. Caleb understood that - he’d been worried for his own teammate. Until he found out he didn’t have to be anymore. He thought, for a moment, what it must have been like for Allegra. Selfishly, he was beyond glad that her powers weren’t something suited for the field. If she’d been out there, and he’d been here, he didn’t know how he would have handled it. It was selfish, it was macho, it was any number of things that Caleb prided himself on not being. But it was also the truth. So he wrapped her in another hug, not really finding words at the moment. |
