WARNINGS: None
STATUS: Complete
Jimmy couldn’t sleep. Which wasn’t all that uncommon since he’d arrived here. But tonight he couldn’t sleep for a different reason. So slowly, he maneuvered his arm out from under Leigh and crept out of bed. She moved a bit, but didn’t wake up and Jimmy gave her one last look before exiting the room and shutting the door behind him. He had no particular destination in mind. Well, he did, but he knew he wouldn’t get outside. Not here. Wherever here was. It was what he had done after his grandparents had died, and what he’d done after his favorite uncle had, and what he’d done (along with Digger and Pat and a six pack they’d swiped) after Digger’s dad had. So instead of looking at the stars, and being comforted by the fact they didn’t change, Jimmy wandered the corridors. He tried to look as if he knew where he was going, but really no one bothered him. People were either too busy or too caught up in their own thoughts. It could have been him. Well, not him exactly. He wouldn’t have been in Europe. Wouldn’t have been him on that train. But it could have been him doing whatever was happening to the group here. Wherever here was. Should have been him. They could be dead. He could be dead. But he wasn’t. Erik was. Aloysha was. The first he didn’t think he could pick out of a crowd. But the second. Well, they were the same year. In the same classes. Acquaintances at least. Enough to speak to sometimes. The other fella had survived the Cooper nightmare with Leigh. And now they were dead. And the rest were missing. And Jimmy was…here. The only one the IVF had saved. He knew he ought to be thinking about them. And he was. He knew he ought to be thinking about their families. And he was. But he was also thinking about something else. He was here. Wherever here was. |
