WHO: Lena Gevelinger and Libby Ross
WHAT: Lena isn't very good at comforting people and Libby is the poor victim of that.
WHERE: IVI cafeteria.
WHEN: BACKDATED to lunchtime on December 30th
STATUS: Complete.
WARNINGS: None.
For Lena, there was something especially calming about the solitude and placidity of IVI now that the vast majority of its students were either kidnapped or searching for the them all across the world. But even though Lena was a loner and always had been, even she liked company from time to time. So when it came time for dinner, Lena sought out company. She dismissed some who she didn't know, and someone she thought was annoying, and settled on a face she recognized and didn't mind all that much: Libby Ross. Lena recognized her from Spanish class, and from her relatively new arrival at the school, and thought the other girl would not be terrible company for dinner. "Hi," she said by way of greeting as her tray of food clattered upon the cafeteria lunch table. "So you were smart and came back here as well, then?" "Yeah," Libby returned, shifting her glass out of the way as the food tray slid into place. "Seemed safer, anyway. Not like I've been here long enough that I can do much." She'd opted out of helping because her power was, though helpful, a hinderance until she could work out how to get it under control. The last thing anyone needed was a comatose Kiwi in the midst of the panic and rescuing and tracking and whatever else was happening in those safe houses. Lena said nothing at first, save for a "hm" that neither related any approval or disapproval or indicated that she understood why Libby couldn't "do much" within the missions. She stabbed at some of the food on her place with a plastic fork, piercing some of it with the prongs before she raised it to her mouth to eat. While Lena chewed, she took in Libby and contemplated what the other girl's power was. She couldn't quite remember, but then again Lena had never made it a point to get to know what other students powers were. It simply didn't interest her all that much. "You weren't here for the dreams, were you? With George Cooper. Something dramatic seems to happen to us all every other month or so. It seems pointless to be worked up over it." "I heard about it on the news." Libby's tone was careful as she observed Lena (that was what the other girl was called, wasn't it? There had been so many new names and faces to learn). "This seemed inevitable, I guess." Lena nodded. Vols from other schools around the world had been kidnapped and forced to do unimaginable things. She was only shocked that it had not happened before now. Lena ate some more of her lunch and then downed some of her drink. This not only seemed inevitable, it was inevitable. Lena only hoped that no one else died for it and that her friends, what few she had made here, returned to IVI only to experience another unimaginable horror some months later. Lena waved her plastic utensil around in the air as she said, indicating the whole of the institute, "this place might be hell but at least no one's died in it." No Vol, anyway, Libby remembered. She shrugged her shoulders and pushed around a piece of carrot on her plate. "It's not the worst. It's not great, but it's not the worst." "Exactly." The plastic fork fell onto Lena's tray with a soft clatter. "You wanted to go and help, didn't you?" "I like doing things. I just." Felt scared. "I can't control my power. Don't want to make everyone else panic just because I can't help fulfilling stupid wishes." "Everyone is panicking already," Lena pointed out as she dragged her glass of water toward her lips. She took a drink, then added, "You can't help them with that. I think everyone has to help themselves." Hadn't that always been her way? Never relying upon others, always having faith in and only counting upon herself. It was simpler that way; no one ever failed to meet your expectations of them if you never expected anything of them in the first place. "And to expect you to be a superhero is foolish of them anyway." "I don't think anyone's expecting anyone to be a superhero," Libby objected. "I think... People want to help when shit goes down. And some people know they could make a big difference. It's better than sitting around and waiting for news, anyway, if you're busy. At least, you know, you feel like you tried." Lena raised an eyebrow in silent disagreement. In Lena's opinion, people were the most selfish, vainest of creatures who never helped anybody unless it was convenient for them and benefitted them. Instead of arguing, however, she picked up her fork and stabbed some more food with it. "Will trying bring that girl back?" Libby's eyes fell back down to her plate. It had seemed like only days ago that she'd last seen Providence, been wrapped into a goodbye embrace from this Vol she'd only just met two weeks prior. "No. But trying probably brought others back," she said quietly. "So that they didn't die like she did." With that as a comeback, Lena found she had nothing to say. She picked some more at her food as she thought about it some more. Perhaps that were so, but she still felt as though they could do very little good themselves. She was only eighteen herself and while Lena fashioned herself as independent and capable, she knew that she could not involve herself in rescue missions where people had died thus far. "I still don't think anyone should be chastised for not going," she added finally. Giving up on the thought of trying to stomach any more food, Libby pushed her plate away and sighed. "Yeah. Me too." Lena observed the other girl, sighing. She placed her fork down and sighed as well. "Come on. Let's go do something to get our minds off of this." |
