“Por favor deje un mensaje despues del tono,” the brisk voice of a man on the other end. The answering machine picks up, again. Graham breathes heavily into the receiver. “¡Hola papá, you must be working a lot.” He pauses and makes a mental count of how many times he’s called. It stings a little when he remembers that his father has not answered a single phone call since July. “[...] I need to talk to you. They want us to get these chips, if we want to leave. I just want to know what you think. They’re suppose to be safe, I guess, but I just don’t know. I thought, since you’re a doctor, maybe you would know better if I should.” The pause is tense this time. Long seconds of silence pass as Graham squeezes the receiver a little tighter. Unpleasant feelings stir in his stomach as he tries to find words. “I wish you would talk to me,” he says, voice cracking with an angry edge. “Four months, papá and you haven’t...” Graham swallows hard and tries to ignore how upset he is feeling. “I’m doing okay. Not much has changed since the last message I left you. Just these chips they want us to take. [...] And I have a girlfriend. She is prettier than Emily was. [...] Anatomy is ok. I’m doing ok. Maybe when I get out of here, I can go to med school, like you.” Graham pauses again, hoping momentarily that his father will pick-up, but only the sound of his own breathing greets him. “OK. I guess, goodbye...” Yet another pause. Reluctantly, Graham puts the phone into the cradle. He sits there for hours, hoping his father will find time to call him back... But like every time before, silence is the only sound in the longue. |
