Sam's body bolted upright in response to the digital ringing of his phone, though his mind was much slower to respond. It blearily locked onto first the clock, showing 3:15 am, then the bright glow of his buzzing phone. He scooped it up and clicked the answer button. "Hello?"
"Hi sweetie! It's your mother."
"Hold on, Mom." Sam ran a palm across his face in exasperation, and kicked his legs out of bed. With a whispered 'sorry' to Max, he creeped out of their room and down the hall to the dimly lit common room.
"Oh honey, is it late? I'm sorry, I just can't get the hang of these time zones. If you called me once in a while you could do it when the time is right for you, you know. Then I wouldn't have to get all my info about you from Sadie."
"Sorry Mom, it's been busy around here." Sam sighed as he dropped onto one of the couches and resisted the urge to nod back off to sleep.
"Well, I just hope that you're having fun, and looking out for your sister. But not too much fun, of course. Sadie told me you were dating an Australian girl. Allison, is it?" A motherly cluck of the tongue.
"What?" Sam sat up a bit at this. "Allegra, Mom. And we're not dating, we're just friends." He scowled, making a mental note to talk to Sadie about her blabbermouth.
"Oh, well, that's good. I told your grandfather and he said you might 'go native', and I don't care how nice it is there, you can't move to Australia forever! I'd never get to see my grandkids, and Robbie needs somebody to play with." A pause, before she continued tentatively, "So is there any girl? Sadie said you're very popular."
"Sadie likes to make up stories." Sam answered churlishly, before adding, "I guess there's a girl though, we just started dating. Her name's Mariana."
"Oh, that's a pretty name! Is she pretty?" Amanda answered with interest that sounded a bit forced, covering up a mother's possessiveness. "Is she from the States?"
"She's very pretty. She's from Brazil."
"Brazil!" Amanda practically shrieked into the phone, "That's almost as far away as Australia! Well, she better be ready to start her family north of the equator young man, because there's no way you're moving to some rainforest."
"I'm not moving anywhere, Mom. We're just dating." Sam pinched the bridge of his nose, exasperated. "Relax."
"Well," Amanda answered primly, "I'm just saying, don't get too involved, who knows how long you're going to be there. What about that friend you mentioned, the one who's father was also military? Mason? Is he dating some exotic girl too, or is he focusing on his studies?"
"No, Mom, he's--" Sam paused, his voice strained as he tried to figure out how to answer this. "He doesn't have a girlfriend." Was all he could muster, with a twinge of guilt. He hurried to turn the conversation away, "How's Robbie?"
"Oh, you know." Amanda sighed, not undramatically. "We love him to bits, but he misses his mother." She quickly added, with affection, "And his uncle, of course."
"Aw. Well we miss him too. Especially Sadie." Sam pursed his lips, wanting to unload his concerns about how Sadie was faring to his mother, but also fearing worrying her unnecessarily. "We're working hard to show them we can be responsible with our powers, hopefully get her back before Robbie even has a proper chance to notice she's gone. I've been working a lot with my Team Leader, Wolfe, and the staff here, and I think they're really starting to see that some of us can be real assets, and not just problems."
"That's nice, honey." Amanda answered distractedly, before calling away from the receiver, "Robbie, no! That's not a chew toy!" Her tongue clucked, "Oh sweetie, I have to go, he's being a real handful. I'll call you back in a few, okay?"
"No, Mom, it's okay." Sam hurried to say, possibly a bit too quickly. "I'll call you tomorrow, okay? Promise."
"Alright dear. Love you."
"I love you too, Mom."
