There was no answer the first time Jimmy picked up the phone. So he hung up and tried again. And again. Finally the fifth time he called, there came a sleepy voice on the other end of the line. “Wuzzit?” “Y’all tell the producers ‘bout Leigh?” Jimmy demanded. “Whozzit?” “It’s Jimmy, ya moron. Amos, did y’all mention Leigh to the producers?” “Tater,” Amos said almost inaudibly. “D’ya know what time it is?” “Dinner here. And I don’t give a good goddamn what it is in Louisiana! Leigh got a release form from Gator Hunters.” Amos cleared his throat. “We, uh, mighta mentioned her.” Jimmy was so startled to get a straight answer that it took him a second to reply. “Why the hell ya do that fer?” He didn’t let Amos answer. “I told y’all we was jus’ friends. Why cain’t y’all leave it alone?” “Jimmy.” Jimmy could hear the sound of bedclothes rustling. Then Amos’s voice got a little louder. “Jimmy, ya thousands a’ miles from home. Don’ want ya to be all alone.” “I ain’t alone! I got friends here. Good ones.” He took a deep breath and exhaled. “I ain’t had a girl since Maddie broke up with me last year. Y’all ain’t concerned then.” “A course not. Ya had us ‘round to he’p. We cain’t he’p ya from here, Jimmy.” Amos paused. “We worried ‘bout ya, Jim. Tha’s all.” Before Jimmy could answer, he heard another voice calling Amos’s name. A girl’s voice. “That the girl from Ameripure?” Amos answered happily, “Yeah. Fin’ly axed her out.” “Good fer you, Amos.” If this didn't sound totally convincing, Jimmy didn't care right now. “Jimmy, I ain’t gonna say sorry. Cause I ain’t. Did it fer yer own good. But won’ do it again, a’ight?” He sighed. “A’ight. I need to go to dinner.” “Talk to this Leigh girl?” “Bye, Amos.” “Night, Jim.” |
