You're my best friend and I love you (not like that) but I'm sorry I have to go. He'd sent that text to Enely before he left. If you'd asked Petr a month ago, he never would have been able to imagine running away from IVI. His only friends were here. He didn't know where else he belonged. And yet here he was now, moving along is short spurts. When he thought he'd been running too long, risking too much, he would pop into a familiar bit of Australian desert scrub. He'd kicked off his shoes so they wouldn't be a dead giveaway. As a plant, he didn't need food or water. He could hide. He didn't know how he'd make it all the way back to Prague, but he would, somehow. He ran another hundred yards, thinking he saw someone else fleeing, and then disappeared into the dimness of the scrub. Soon, so soon, he would be home. He recalled the red clay roofs of Prague. Exploring the old cemetary in Josefov with Judita. The smell of his maminka's perfume. Lights glittering off the river under Charles Bridge. Enely standing on the bridge, snow melting on her warm skin, Tanja laughing. He'd be leaving both of them behind. Enely would be disappointed. He didn't want to leave her, or Tanja, or even Karim, but he couldn't take them, and he didn't belong here. This was the only way he would ever go home. He would go home to his parents and his sister and his country would shelter him. And then, unexpectedly, he felt hands picking him up. It was easy to get lost in his thoughts as a plant. The surprise made him pop back into his human form, and he fell to the ground. Dust scrappled under his bare toes, and he ran. He got only a few yards before the guards grabbed him again. He struggled, but they were dragging him bodily. "No, please don't take me back," he yelled. "Please, I'm not even a citizen of an IVF member nation! I don't belong here." He tried his best to keep the tears he felt thickening in his throat at bay. One of the guards laughed. "You're a vol, kid. Of course you fucking belong here." |
