Exhausted, freaked out and scared, Sunny made her way back to the girls dorms. She just wanted to rest, to sleep for a few hours in her locked room, and hope that the new day would bring something other than violence. It made her feel sick, the sight of it, the atmosphere, it clashed with every opinion she had about violence, and even though she knew she should fight, she should stand up for Vols, and for her classmates. She wasn't a fighter though, that was Sam, and the thought of him out there made her sick. She wrapped her arms around herself, kept her head down and walked towards the entrance, and almost bumped into Dani. She stopped, startled and then smiled, glad to see a friendly face. "Bloody hell, Dani, am I glad to see you!" She said, and quickly pulled the girl in for a hug. "You alright?" The hug was a welcome change from feeling terrified, and Dani didn’t quite want it to end. “Shit, it’s all gone to shit,” she shook her head sadly as she pulled away from Sunny’s arms. “Everyone’s going mad out there. They bombed the place!” Dani had been trying to defend it earlier, she’d thought it was going to be settled. Distressed, her lower lip wobbled as she no longer tried to hold it together. Enver was dead, others were dead. Her friendly teammate was the last person she could have imagined, and the casualty list just seemed to be growing with each hour. “I don’t even know who got out and who didn’t, and there’s so much fighting,” Dani told her. She’d run away from it eventually. Sunny nodded and linked her arm through Dani's, grateful for the human contact. Glad just to be with someone she knew and trusted, while everything around them fell apart. "I haven't heard from Sam." Sunny admitted, quietly. She didn't want to cry, or think the worst, but her eyes stung and her voice wavered. "I know he's probably fine. Busy doing his thing. But..." She trailed off and looked at the floor as they walked towards the dorms. "But there are just so many people I haven't heard from." She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, "Sorry, everything's going to hell and I'm just trying not to cry." This time it was Dani’s turn to comfort, and she squeezed Sunny’s arm gently. “Hey, Sam’ll be okay,” Dani promised her, no matter if she believed it or not. “He’s done this before, he’s got his wits about him.” She walked slowly along with Sunny, struggling to find more encouraging things to say than that. It all seemed fairly bleak at the moment. “Of any of us, he’s probably going to be fine,” she decided upon that sentence, although it sounded weak as soon as the words left her mouth. Sunny laughed, but it wasn't a mirthful sound. There was a touch of hysteria to it, and bitterness, like she'd been through too much and had reached the end of her tether. "You realise you just used 'Sam' and 'wits' in the same breath, right?" She asked. She shook her head. "I know you're right. He'll probably be fine. I'm just worried for him, and everyone else." Her friends from Vol Club, her geeky friends that were always willing to talk comics and movies with her, long after her classmates got bored. She was even worried about her team. "This is just a... I've never seen anything like this. I don't even-" Sunny rubbed a hand over her eyes. "I just want it all to stop, Dani." Dani nodded slowly and pulled her friend closer as they walked with linked arms. “It looks as though things might get quieter for the night, I don’t know. There’s only so much people can do in the dark, cariad. Perhaps we can get you some rest,” Dani told her. “If we take turns, perhaps?” It was probably a foolish idea, but Dani was tired too. It wasn’t far to the dorms, and they both needed to sleep. Sunny nodded. "Want to come to my room? I doubt Qamar will come back, she'll be busy doing her thing." It would be nice to have company, to take it in turns to stay awake in case something happened, and Sunny had always hated being alone. Especially when the world was going to hell around her. "If we don't feel like sleeping, we can play cards or do something to take our mind off of everything?" “Of course,” Dani told her, and she started to walk a little faster. To be back in the dorms would set her mind at ease, she reckoned. “Even if it’s just ‘snap’ that’ll be good.” The girls entered the building arm-in-arm, and for a moment Dani briefly considered trying to find some food. But no, she remembered, no one would be there. They were on lockdown, for all the way that they were trying to find some normality. Dani paused in the doorway, turning sharply as she heard a slight sound. It was very small, but she’d picked it up. “Did you hear that?” She asked Sunny. Sunny looked up, the noise was coming from 'up' wasn't it? It was so quiet, she could barely hear it. "It sounds... like... I don't know, but I hear it." Sunny said, unable to describe it. It sounded like a quiet hiss, that brought about memories of crappy movies where the good guys get knocked out by a gas. Holy shit, they were being gassed, Sunny realised too late. They'd breathed it in, now she knew it was there she could feel it in her throat, her lungs, the air was hazy, like on a pollution filled summer's day, but there was no pollution, it was gas. "Oh God, it's gas." She choked out before she started coughing, and lifted a hand to cover her mouth as her other unlinked from her friend's arm and gripped her hand tightly. She was here. Dani and Sunny, two British Vols, choking on gas together, and Sunny wouldn't leave her. It was stinging her throat and eyes, and clouding the air in front of them. Dani felt as though she wanted to throw up, and she clutched Sunny’s hand desperately before tugging on her arm. They had to move, no matter how difficult it was. She coughed, trying to cover her mouth with her other hand but the stuff was already everywhere. Tears streaming from her eyes she tugged on Sunny’s hand once again, a cue to leave, and started to move towards the door. If they could only get some fresh air perhaps it would be okay, she thought wildly, but the stuff was filling her lungs so rapidly that she was starting to feel overwhelmed by it. Sunny ran with her friend, tried to leave the air that had become painful to breathe, tried to get outside into the open, where the fresh air wouldn't sting her lungs, her throat, her eyes, her skin. She could feel her eyes begin to water as they raced for the exit, tears fell down her face as she tried to cover her mouth and nose, tried to stop breathing, but it was too late. By the time she reached the fresh, clear air, she could tell it had done something to her. The part of her where he power was, the part of her soul that was Vol, was gone. She squeezed Dani's hand, and looked at her. "I... do you...?" She asked, unable to vocalise the whole question. "Your power?" Tearful, Dani shook her head wildly. She had no way of knowing. There were other students around, but she was too scared to even try pulling their powers away after that. She gulped down some of the cooler night air, frantic as she squeezed Sunny’s hand in return. “I - I don’t know,” she confessed quietly. “I don’t know.” |
