WHEN: Squad mission on July 5
WHERE: Indonesian School
WARNINGS: Death and stuff, you know
STATUS: complete
Chris was having an off day. She seemed to be half a step behind, as evidenced by her encounter with Dante earlier. So far she’d come off unscathed, but she was struggling to keep up - her instincts were off, and she was ready to be done, to head out, go back to IVI. But this was worth it, she kept telling herself. Things weren’t as black and white as they had been for her a few weeks ago - things at the school were getting worse, and she no longer assumed that being against Vols Rising meant the IVF had her best interests at heart. She was sure about one thing, though: Vols Rising were the bad guys, and fighting them made sense. They were attacking this school, unprovoked, and she needed to help. Part of her knew that there might be students who wanted to go with Vols Rising, but she felt a responsibility to stop them, too. She didn’t want the group growing in numbers - her role here was to stop them, not to facilitate their growth. Hearing a noise behind her, Chris spun around, instincts kicking in and automatically freezing the source of the noise. In the door of the classroom down the hall there was a teenaged boy, maybe the age of her brother. As she approached him, she noticed that he appeared to be an Indonesian student - young, too young to be caught up in this. After hesitating a moment she unfroze him, gesturing for him to come with her. “Come on,” she told him earnestly. “We’ll get you out of here before...” she continued, and then paused when she saw a flash of hands appear from behind the door. Hand movements she recognized, and then she herself was frozen. It took her a moment to realize that the power holding her in place wasn’t her own power, though. When she froze people, time stopped for them, unable to remember anything that happened from freezing to unfreezing. Chris, on the other hand, was simply paralyzed, able to hear everything, and still see things in her line of sight. A girl came into view, this one older, blonde, speaking English without a discernable accent. A Vols Rising member, Chris realized with a jolt. They must have been together. “It’s one of the Vol Squad members,” said the girl who had frozen her, an air of matter-of-factness in her voice. “You know, the IVI students that do whatever the IVF wants. Leave her here, we can meet up with the others.” But at the words Vol Squad, the Indonesian boy’s eyes narrowed. They locked with Chris’, and she felt a bit of a pain in the back of her head. It moved forward and intensified, more painful than the worst migraine she’d ever had. And then the world went black, and her lifeless body crumpled to the ground. “No!” yelled the girl, but she was too late. “Fuck! We don’t kill other Vols if we can help it. They’re our brethren. Even...” her voice trailed off and she shook her head at the girl at their feet, obviously distraught, and then grabbed the younger boy’s hand. “Come on. Let’s get out of here before someone else comes.” |
