Solitary was definitely worse this time. True, that was probably because now they were aware that the IVF had no qualms over experimenting on or killing the Vols they kept in solitary, and the reasons behind getting placed in there were more and more ridiculous. However, it wasn't like Jade had skipped training. She'd used her powers on the guards, which was a big no-no considering what had happened to Sol and Devon. Or, well, she'd used her powers on the bugs, and the bugs had attacked the guards, so maybe having that step in between would work in her favor. And none of the guards had died, right? They'd know if that had happened, right? Oh shit, what if one of them was allergic to bees?? Jade's spurts of panic came and went over her time in solitary, unsure of how long they lasted or how long she'd been there. She almost wished the room was less damn clean, that it wasn't sealed somehow to keep even the smallest insects out. She also wished that she hadn't been driven to the point where bugs seemed like good company. Even the flies and their tiny brains and their tiny panic over their tiny lives would be welcome conversation. They lived, they were afraid, and they died. Maybe she had more in common with them than she wanted to admit. --- Outside Leona quietly bade goodbye to Jace and followed the guard down the corridor. First Vanessa, then Padraig, now Jade. Third time unlucky. This was happening far too often to her, having to visit people she cared for, reassure them that all would be well even though it wouldn’t be. Who was to say that her stay wouldn’t be more permanent than a couple of minutes the next time? At the door she paused, hugging Jace’s words to her like a protective charm. You've been through a lot and you're still standing. Don't underestimate yourself. She inhaled, exhaled. Then entered. Wordlessly she took her roommate in her arms, a tentative yet all-encompassing hug. There was nothing to say. --- Nearly the second that the door to her room opened and Jade saw that familiar head of red hair, the girl went flying off the cot into her roommate's arms. "Hi it is so good to see you are you okay is everything okay what day is it what's happening out there?" Jade asked nearly all in one breath, knowing that their time was extremely limited, and afraid that if she didn't rush all of her questions out that she'd never get a chance to. --- “We’re fine,” Leona told her, locking Jade in a fierce hug back. “Your teammates - Taki, Leigh, Jace, Moa, Noah - they’re all fine.” Jade would get the message; that those five had not been part of the defense training, and the VU therefore remained undiscovered. “A bunch of people have been put in solitary too though. Davi, Rashida, Edwin, Savannah, Javier - there’s a few other unexpected ones,” she added, keeping her tone neutral, as if these were just chance names that Jade may or may not know. “Omar and Immy too - I think Loon is going for a record. Watch out, Toucan, we’re onto you.” Her humour felt somewhat flat. --- "Oh no, you've discovered Toucan's secret," Jade smiled faintly, then quickly added "Joking, completely joking, haha," just in case the guards who she knew would be listening in had decided to completely ignore all sarcasm as a potential threat. "That's good though. I'm glad to hear it. About there not being other Toucans here. Not that there are other other people here for whatever reason." These visits were so hard, especially now, knowing that every word said was probably being strategically analyzed. "Everything's been normal here. Food could be better, though." No crazy experiments, thankfully, which lead Jade to think they'd probably be getting out in two days like normal. --- “Good, good. I’m glad.” Glad, when the situation was anything but. Leona nudged Jade’s head onto her shoulder, her eyes bright with worry. She wanted to warn her, to scream at her to be careful, but how to warn her, and how could Jade possibly help herself? Leona glanced upwards, spied the camera on the wall. She wanted to tear it down. “Pad and I - we’ve broken up,” she said quickly, latching onto something to distract both of them. “We grew apart, wanted... different things. I was saying to Caleb on Saturday that I wouldn’t blame anyone here if they found a relationship just one more thing they couldn’t juggle - we’re all being pulled in so many different directions, and yeah, essentially that’s it.” She still felt hurt, betrayed, guilt that somehow in spite of all her efforts, she hadn’t done enough, but it was more of a dull sort of heartsickness. She could move onto Phase II now - whatever that ended up being. --- "Whoa, really?" she asked, forgetting for a moment that the two only had another minute to go before Leona would be pulled out of her room, leaving Jade there alone for another day. They were girls with normal problems and normal relationships that ended for reasons that "normal" people would never have the chance to experience. "I'm really sorry. Although... well, good if you both want different things, but not good, but you know what I mean. I thought I heard you guys arguing the other day; I'm sorry I didn't come in or say anything or... anything." --- “It was better than you didn’t.” Leona gave a small smile - all she could manage - and squeezed Jade’s shoulder reassuringly. “He’s really - he’s all over the place - and I guess that I was the best person for him after the kidnappings, but not what he needs right now.” Words, selected carefully, measured out. Always mindful of the cameras. Her fingers reached up to tug at a stray curl self-consciously. “It was probably for the best - it needed to happen, the way things are heading. But I can’t help but wonder what could have been, you know? If we ever get out of here, if we have a chance to be anything-” else than just Vols “-anywhere other than here, or if there’s ever going to be enough water under the bring. I think that I miss him as my friend the most.” She still wore that smile, but her eyes were becoming just that bit more misty. Stupid. Stupid, stupid. Jade was in solitary, and she was spouting on about boy problems? --- "You'll find someone better. Someone right instead of right now. There's just slim pickings here; that's probably the problem." Normal words. Hopeful words, in a situation where there wasn't much hope left. "It'll work out at least friend-wise. People usually just need time." Time, which she didn't have much left of herself until she found herself alone again. It was two days. Just forty-eight hours. Less hours than the entire series of Battlestar Galactica. A weekend of watching all the Harry Potter movies Saturday, sleeping, then watching all the Lord of the Rings movies on Sunday. "When I get out, we'll watch The Hobbit, yeah? Or whatever chick flicks you feel like watching. Your choice." --- Leona didn’t want to find someone else. She wanted Padraig; or rather, she wanted them as they had been in the past. She wanted her good friend back, the person who she could ask to stay over when the nightmares, the memories got too overwhelming, who she could sit with and not have to talk about the kidnappings, not have to explain how she was feeling to him - and he just got it. But then his behaviour had become more and more reckless and she had got him back out of solitary but not really got him back... Again, Phase II. “We will. We absolutely will.” She gave Jade’s hand a fierce squeeze. “And we’ll watch that troll scene over and over. Is there anything I’ve left out? Anything else I can tell you?” --- There were a million things that Jade wanted Leona to tell her, but none that were safe to ask. Not now; not here. She shook her head no, but then contradicted herself, asking Leona, "the flies haven't been acting up again, have they? Last time they were being bratty when they couldn't find their khaleesi." Jade laughed a bit, then wrapped her arms around Leona again for another hug. "Thank you so much for coming. Be safe, okay? Tell everyone I said to be safe.” --- “Don’t worry, Khaleesi, your people are fine.” Leona smiled. She had never read the Game of Thrones series; it was too dark, too earthy for her - but you couldn’t be around Jade and Jace and the amount of other Toucans she was without picking up these references by osmosis. “And the rest of your team is fine and Marty is fine and we are all fine.” Fine fine fine. The word covered a multitude of sins. She latched onto Jade for one last desperate hug and then the guard was at the door. Miss. Your time is up. “I’ll be there when you come out, okay Jade! I’ll be there for you like you were there for me after Christmas.” --- "Okay," Jade nodded, feeling the adrenalin accompanying the words your time is up searing through her like fire and ice all at once. "Love you, Leona," she called after her roommate as the guard shuffled the other girl out of the room. "Wait wait!" she tried to squeeze a few last requests in, suddenly remembering everything now that their time was up. "Ask the other Canadians to make sure they try to find out the hockey drafts for me if they can! And tell Marty--" The door shut with a finality that ensured that anything she wanted to tell Marty would have to wait. ---- Goddamnit. God, goddamnit. As she bit her lip down hard enough to break skin, following the tread tread tread of his boots down the hallway, she pictured herself drawing a feline claw and raking a slow red wound across his pristine neck. |
