After the return from Melbourne, Léo had been tired enough to collapse into bed, but he hadn't slept well, or long. By the early morning, he was awake again, and unable to fall back asleep, he had wandered down to the lake. At this time of day, just before the sunrise, with the sky just beginning to lighten, most vols were in bed asleep. Or they were in their rooms trying to sleep. Likely there were some other people experiencing a sleepless night. He wanted to believe that the reason he was awake was that he had so much to think about. Plotting to do. He was turning over his encounter with the VR member -- Ernest -- in his mind, wondering when, and if, he should put this little piece of information in play. But he kept coming back to whether or not he had a moral obligation to go to the IVF now. If he waited, other people may die. He didn't get up and go to the Dean, or ask to see the Colonel, though. Something held him by the lake, even though he didn't relish the idea of another grisly scene like yesterday's. It would be more advantageous to bide his time, let the VR forget. The would likely be leagues away now, on another continent, probably, thanks to their teleporter. It would be best to bring the information forward when there was more intelligence, and besides, offering it up so eagerly did not make it much of a bargaining chip. Looking down onto the ground, he surveyed the web of lines stretching out over IVI. They were familiar to him now -- the students in their dormitories, and the vols in permanent lock up, and... His thoughts stopped short, as he realized there was no line stretching to that little building. Since Coralie had brought it to his attention, he had been watching, and couldn't help but notice that it had been flickering on and off for days. It wasn't like Muhammad's flickering, where the line would fade in and out slowly, or become faint, but like a blinking light. That had troubled him some, until the Vol Squad had been whisked away to Melbourne and he'd had other concerns. Now the line was gone. |
