FROM: Ansel Voss <avoss@ivi.edu.au>
SUBJECT: On pacifying measures Dean,
The hostility directed towards Vol Squad members has, I believe, a solid ground to it. It is only natural for the Vols who are left behind, many of whom are already predisposed to amateur rabble rousing and persecution complexes, to lash out against Vol Squad members, whom they believe to be their peers, rather than the Staff who select us. I have no problem with this behavior: it makes IVI a safer place for the staff, and though I believe none of the current students would have the courage to assault a Vol Squad member, I am confident any of us would be able to subdue them with ease.
I write to you then with a suggestion to pacify the remaining students: allow visiting days. I know the measure seems extreme, but if you consider the underlying truth that many of these students families do not really want to see them again, I think you may find something worth considering. The amount of family members who would visit are few. Add to this that, with short notice, the cost may be prohibitive for many families. If the process were by application and both students and visitors had to be approved, an actual visitation could be put off indefinitely. But it would give the student body the illusion of more freedom. I think that is important.
As an aside, I was curious if there was any talk of allowing newer students to apply for Vol Squad status.
Yours,
Lt Ansel Voss
