Not in a million years would Allegra have estimated just how drained she would be in the company of fretful aid workers and victims. Whilst there was joy and relief when people were found, there was also anxiety, despondency, anger, grief, more emotions she no longer had the energy to even name. She'd tried to concentrate on the most emotionally stable individuals in her company in order to filter out the rest of the emotions that surrounded her, but even this was a difficult task at best. After a long, harder than expected day, Allegra shuffled into the lobby of the hotel. It wasn't that it was fancy, five star hotel, but it was luxurious in comparison to what they'd seen out there. In fact, she wasn't sure she'd ever actually seen devastation like this up close before. It had always been mediated, witnessed via a screen, read in a newspaper, heard over the radio or discussed second-hand. Everything she'd ever had was handed to her on a silver platter. Claudia was right. She'd never suffered this sort of disappointment before, never encountered this level of loss. And here she was, worried about how her power was affecting her. God, she reflected without realising that she'd stopped walking altogether and that her eyes were filling up with large, salty tears. I'm awful. Though Caleb’s day hadn’t been as difficult as Allegra’s, it hadn’t been particularly easy, either. He’d quickly learned that, even though he defaulted to Allegra’s powers, he shouldn’t be channeling them - this was a far from the ideal situation to be an empath in. So a little guiltily he focused his power elsewhere, all too aware of the fact that Allegra couldn’t turn it off as easily as he could. Still, other powers were more useful in this particular case, so he’d focused on Anthony’s, and even though he still had a painful kickback every time he used the other boy’s powers, he felt better about the fact that he was actively helping other people. A lot of the time he felt useless with his power - knowing that without another Vol around, he wasn’t really much of anything. But today had allowed him to feel useful, given him something to do, and even if he could physically feel the pain of the people he was helping, it was only for a day, and was worth it if it meant he could put his power to good use. But he was still ready for the end of the day when it came, uncomfortable and drained after having spent all day with Anthony’s powers. When he spotted Allegra in the lobby he made his way to her, growing concerned once he was close enough to channel her power for the first time since that morning. “Ally?” he asked tentatively once he’d reached her. “Hun, what’s wrong?” "Nothing," she lied, and hurriedly tried to compose herself. "Just tired, you know." “No, not just tired,” Caleb said, frowning. He reached for her hand, glancing around and the people around them, and nodding his head towards a set of doors. “Let’s go for a walk?” he said, wanting to get her away from the swarm of emotions around them. “Out back, maybe?” A walk Allegra could acquiese to, but it would involve talking. Specifically talking about what was wrong, because that's what Caleb managed to do with her -- get her to open up. And even when he didn't manage to get her to open up as much as, perhaps, he would have liked, he managed it better than most people Allegra knew. And frankly, she was disinterested in sharing what she was thinking right now, since hiding her emotions was impossible if he was channeling her power. "No. I think I'll just grab a shower and lie down for a bit." “Okay,” Caleb said a little uncertainly. He wanted to push, but she’d had a long day, and even though the crying wasn’t just because she was tired, she probably was, so he didn’t want to add to any of that stress. “Do you want company, or would some alone time be better?” he asked, trying to be accommodating. Making decisions right now was too hard, so Allegra shrugged. "Don't really care." “I’ll come then,” he said, giving her hand a little squeeze and glad to not get an outright rejection as he started towards the elevators. |
