WHO: Hailey, Damien, & Nate
WHAT: The most awkward Solitary visit ever
WHEN: 12:45, Friday
WHERE: Solitary city
WARNINGS: None, really!
STATUS: Completed
HAILEY: Both the day and time were unknown to Hailey. She wanted to say it was in the afternoon due to her current level of non-tiredness, but she could have slept all afternoon and now it was evening. There were no windows outside, and her power didn’t help her with time of day. It hadn’t been so bad at first, but by now Hailey was incredibly bored. She’d counted every mark, scuff, and crack she could see, she’d sung quietly to herself, she’d made mental lists that she’d forget the second she was out of here, and she’d thought about if any of her friends were here. The biggest question was what was going to happen? She’d received no information or reprimanding or anything, and that was the worst part. At the sound of steps, Hailey sat up quickly. Her hearing was definitely better. She quickly moved to the door of the cell, only to come face to face with Damien. “Hey,” she greeted with a bright smile. “Happy birthday,” she said quietly as her smile faltered, “or did I miss it?” As Hailey spoke, she realized there was someone else coming. She tilted her head to see around Damien and saw Nate. Her heart fluttered and Hailey's hands tightened against the wall of her to her cell. "Nate," she breathed, "I'm so sorry, you got out? Did you... did you turn?" Guilt weighed heavy in Hailey's voice before she even considered the fact that Nate and Damien were together. NATHAN: “No,” he said. “I, uh, got out of there. I wanted to go after you but I thought I’d better... not.” It was bad enough without me throwing people around and maiming them, he did not say. If he’d been alone with Hailey he probably would have. She knew him well enough to not take it too seriously – or to at least tell him off for being too morbid about it. “I went and found Caleb instead. The others are all fine, by the way, didn’t get dragged in or anything.” DAMIEN: Approaching Nate to ask if they could visit Hailey together had been easy, but now Damien was in his company and not entirely sure what to say to him. Weeks of being nagged by Savannah to give Nate a chance seemed to have sunk in, at least a little, so the frown that he wore was entirely for Hailey’s benefit. Especially upon her greeting. He raised his eyebrows, studiously ignoring the fact that she was locked in a room that made him feel as though he wanted to leave it straight away, and didn’t smile back. “Missed it,” he told her. He paused, but had little time to exchange pleasantries. “What the fuck happened?” Damien asked her, still confused about the whole thing. HAILEY: “Good,” Hailey said in response to Nate. She wasn’t sure what she had been thinking, trying to pull him into a fight. It’d been stupid and reckless. She was glad to hear the others were fine and not in solitary, but there wasn’t time to ask anymore about them. Damien spoke up, and Hailey realized his expression hadn’t changed. Worry clouded her happiness at seeing the pair of them as Hailey watched him. “Sorry,” she apologized quietly, it was sincere but not what Damien wanted or needed to hear right now. “I don’t know,” Hails admitted honestly. “You know when you’re on the ice and the other team’s forward slams into the net and the only thing you can think of is defending your goalie and it totally skews how you play? It was like that. I just... I just had to get in on it. And hit the guards. I don’t know, it was weird.” Hailey squinted a bit at Damien, trying to figure out if he was mad at her for fighting, mad at her for getting put in solitary, or uncomfortable at being here. Her eyes flicked to Nate, but at the moment her only expression was concern. NATHAN: Trust Hailey to make a hockey metaphor out of it. Nate still felt bad for letting her take off like that, even though he knew that him going feral on top of everything would’ve been so much worse than what had actually happened. “Are you okay?” he asked, glancing awkwardly at Damien. He wanted to touch her, kiss her maybe, but settled for – equally awkwardly – taking her hand. He hadn’t minded letting Damien come along when asked, but now he wondered if it hadn’t been a bad decision. It wasn’t exactly the most comfortable situation ever, even without both of them there. DAMIEN: Damien noticed Nate’s glance and the movement, and for a moment the frown was for Nate. They had two minutes and he wanted to find out what had happened during the protest to make Hailey act so weirdly. “But Hails,” Damien continued on, “You weren’t on ice, and it’s not like you just got a penalty. It’s solitary,” Damien had an uneasy glance around himself before sighing slowly. There would be time to mull over what Hailey had done and why. “Are you though? Are you okay?” HAILEY: “Ye–” Hailey started to say while nodding her head as Nate grabbed her hand. The small physical contact made everything seem so much more real. It brought everything she had been ignoring to the surface and her breath shuddered. She was in solitary! Sure she’d broken the law before, but she hadn’t even been to the drunk tank, and now she was thrown in a cell alone where the worst of the worst went! Hailey felt vulnerable and awful, and she turned to Nate and pulled him in a tight hug. She stepped away to give Damien a hug as well, trying to even out her breath as she did so. “I know,” she replied, finally, moving back towards Nathan and wrapping her arms around his chest. “I’m okay... it’s, I don’t like it in here... Dame are you o– you didn’t have to come, but thank you.” If it had been Damien alone she might have added ‘I love you’ to that statement, but with Nate here and the incredibly different relationship she had with both of them, it just didn’t seem right. NATHAN: Nate had heard Hailey’s trying-really-hard-not-to-cry breath before, and hugged her hard, like that would somehow make a difference. He still felt immensely awkward and out of place doing so when they weren’t alone, but she needed it, so when she returned to his side after giving Damien a hug as well, he slid his arms around her again. “It probably won’t be too much longer,” he said. “It’s Friday. The others only had to stay three days, it’s been two and... a half? Almost.” Most of that was him simply trying to make her feel better. He really hoped that he wasn’t lying to her. Everyone who had been in solitary before this whole mess hadn’t been there more than a few days. It had to be the same for these. “You knew we’d come,” he added. “Both of us.” DAMIEN: Damien relaxed a little as she hugged him, that frown lessened but still not quite gone. He squeezed her gently as they hugged, and shook his head. “You’ll be out in no time. Everyone’s asking about you, they miss you. It’ll probably even be today, yeah?” He folded his arms as Hailey went back to Nate, trying to not think too much about the room. Solitary seemed like a nightmare, and he didn’t want to dwell on it for too long. “Caleb and the gang asked after you. Sav says hey and something about ideas and not to worry, even Stephen was shocked and everyone sends their best,” Damien forced himself to sound more upbeat than he felt as he reeled off a list of names. “And they’re all waiting for you to get out, yeah?” HAILEY: She felt stronger holding onto Nate, but she was afraid of what would happen when they had to leave and that door closed behind them. “Yeah, it probably won’t be long...” she said, trying to force her voice to sound confident. Nate and Damien would be able to tell, but neither of them would likely point it out. “Fuck, that must have been a nightmare for Allegra, is she okay?” Hailey asked, looking up at Nate. She knew that they were all concerned about her, but that didn’t stop her being concerned about her friends. “Her and Claudia...” Hailey started, but then trailed off. They could get into a long winded conversation about the tension between those two, but they didn’t have time for it right now. “Thank Sav for me,” Hailey said with a smile. She would be out for Damien’s party, she had to be. “Stephen?” Hailey repeated with a chuckle. “He’s never shocked. Tell everyone I’m fine, eh? And I miss them too.” She wished they had more time, there wasn’t time for any sort of conversation with only two minutes, and she could feel the seconds rushing by with every word she said. NATHAN: “It won’t be long,” Nate said again, pushing Hailey’s hair off her shoulders as he talked. It was a familiar gesture, enough so to remind him how weird this whole thing was. “You’ll be fine.” He wasn’t very useful, repeating the same things over and over. He probably should’ve thought about what to say beforehand. “Allegra is...” She wasn’t in a great place right now, anyone could tell that much, but he hadn’t asked Caleb for details and knew it was best to leave her alone when she felt that way. “She used her power to calm a few people down. And then she left. I think she’ll be fine. You’ll have to ask her for yourself later, okay? You’re better at that.” DAMIEN: Damien nodded as Nate spoke, stuck for what to say next. They only had those two precious minutes, and he wanted to make them count. “And you’ll be out soon to ask her yourself,” Damien echoed Nate’s words. “Yeah? Don’t try defend the goalie in that way again so quick, please?” Damien asked her, recalling the earlier metaphor that Hailey had used. HAILEY: Hailey could read between the lines. Allegra was a mess. How could anyone blame her? The protest was insane, and now people were probably pissed it’d gone that way. “Tell her we’ll go camping when I’m out, okay?” Hailey said. “And tells Claws to keep practicing hockey,” she added, her words coming out faster now. She had so many questions, so many messages... it would be easier if she knew when she was getting out. If it was tomorrow she’d be fine, but if it wasn’t for a few more days she had so many more things to relay back to her friends. Time was running out, though. “I won’t - I won’t get back here,” she said. Hailey heard footsteps, was that the guard? Panic rushed through her. She wasn’t ready to say bye, to be alone again. Crossing the room, Hailey gave Damien a tight hug. There were so many things she wanted to say and so many ways in which she wanted to explain herself... but the words just weren’t coming fast enough. Turning around, Hailey went back to Nate to wrap her arms around his neck and kiss him. Not caring that Damien was in the room, not caring that tears were silently rolling down her face. NATHAN: He had thought that Hailey might be upset, but he had hoped there wouldn’t be crying. He wasn’t as bad with them as some people he knew (raising a kid did that to you), but leaving her behind when she was sobbing was going to be hard. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her, momentarily forgetting that they weren’t alone. (Or not forgetting. Pretending.) “It will be okay,” he said as they broke apart. “Only one more day.” He tried to wipe the tears off her cheeks, but they were running too quickly for him to manage. “You can do one day,” he said, trying to keep his own voice steady. “You’ll be fine.” He looked up and happened to meet a very uncomfortable looking Damien’s eyes over her head. He cleared his throat and let her go. It seemed to be for the best, really. DAMIEN: He knew he’d be the exact same if he were in that situation, but even so Damien couldn’t help looking rather uncomfortable. He averted his eyes, staring at the bed, trying desperately to think of something else to say. He pushed his hands into the pockets of his jeans and cleared his throat softly. It felt like he was intruding, but their time was nearly up. “Hails we’re gonna have to go in a few, but you can do it. If anyone can, it’s you,” he told her. He had no advice for how to make the silence feel less imposing, or the night to drag a little less. The uncomfortable expression was still there, now struggling to keep his own composure as his thoughts kept drifting to the idea of being locked in the room alone. “You’ll be fine,” he echoed Nate once more. HAILEY: Hailey simply nodded in response to Nate's words. Any words she tried to speak would crack with emotion or just not come out. She knew she would be fine and she knew it couldn't be much longer, but that logic didn't quite meet her emotions. Maybe if the guards had smiled at her or answered a question or even said hi, but they were quick with her meals with no time for small talk. Hailey didn't realize how many people were in solitary, but the number might have something to do with how little time the guards had for her. The sound of Damien clearing his throat brought Hailey back to the present. Her tears slowed, but they were sure to come back hard and fast when the door closed behind the boys. "I'll be fine," she repeated back to Damien. Glancing between the two of them and feeling the change in Nate, Hailey laughed. "Is this the first time you've been together?" She felt touched, really, that they could get along for her. NATHAN: “Yeah,” Nate said as the door opened behind them. “Without you, anyway. See, we can get along after all.” He said the last bit with a smile, trying to make a joke of it. He wasn’t all that successful, but he did his best. “We have to go. See you soon, okay?” DAMIEN: Damien nodded and mustered up a smile for Hailey. “We’ll see you soon,” he agreed, raising his hand to wave reluctantly. Leaving was going to be difficult, and he tried to keep smiling as he made his way towards the door. HAILEY: She didn’t want them to go, but she knew they had to. The visit had been amazing, but also awful. It felt both longer and shorter than two minutes. Hails stepped with them, still clutching Nate’s hand. She’d have to let go, she knew, and her hanging on would be awful for him, but she couldn’t let go. Not yet. “See you,” she said to the pair of them. When Nate reached the door, Hailey pulled on him hard and kissed him quickly. She swallowed and turned away, not wanting to see the door close behind them. It wouldn’t be long, right? She’d be out soon and able to see all her friends. Tears rolled down Hailey’s face and she slowly slid down the wall. Might as well let them out now. She was alone, save for the camera watching her. This hadn’t been so hard, but she didn’t want to be here anymore. She was fiery and broke rules, but she wasn’t a delinquent. Hell, she liked being here more than she disliked it. Hails didn’t want that to change, but she couldn’t help but question things the longer she spent in silence. |
