WHEN: Friday afternoon.
WHERE: Solitary confinement cells.
WARNINGS: None.
STATUS: Complete.
Sadie had promised herself and her friends that she wouldn’t end up back here, but on reflection she had to admit that her promises weren’t worth very much these days. Not when so much of her life was out of her own control. So it was that she’d spent the past forty hours or so (not that she was counting), bitter and angry and confused and scared. What had happened at the protest? All she knew is that they’d been in the Quad, and they’d all been pissed off but nobody was fighting - it was a peaceful protest after all - and then all of a sudden guards were attacking students and tasers were out and it was chaos. Juli was fighting, Seth was flying through the air, there was shouting and crying and the startling pain of a taser... At least, this time, she had people other than herself to worry about. What had happened to Rashida? To Juli, Seth, Libby? Did Valya get away, was anyone seriously hurt? It was a good distraction, but she was so enormously relieved anyway when the door opened to admit her first visitor of her second stay in solitary: Sam. “Oh,” she said as she stood up, startled to see her brother. He hadn’t visited last time, after all. “Hi.” The tension in Sam was obvious when he arrived in the solitary room; his mind was a roiling mix of concern, anger, and relief at seeing his sister alright. He was conflicted as to whether he should even visit or not given the precedent he sent last time, but his need for answers outweighed his moral indignation. "Jesus, Sade." Was all he managed to sigh as he looked at his sister from the doorway. “I didn’t want to come back here,” she said, immediately defensive. Crossing her arms, she glared at her brother, though it came across more petulant than anything else. “Despite what you think. I didn’t. I was just trying to help, they were attacking us, okay?” "You were throwing rocks at the guards." Sam countered plaintively, and realizing how that sounded, quickly added, "Big rocks." Still, it was obvious to everyone and their mother that something unusual had happened at the rally, and Sam seemed ready to give some ground in the face of his sister's defence. "You shouldn't have engaged. They were subduing the people who were fighting them, not attacking." “They started it,” Sadie shot back, but she even as she said it she wasn’t entirely sure if it was true. Everyone was really angry, she remembered that much. Biting back a sigh, she shook her head and looked down. “I couldn’t just let them hurt Rashida and Juli and everyone else, I don’t know... I don’t really remember it very well, I wasn’t thinking.” She paused, and looked back up at Sam. “Thanks for coming this time.” Plenty of counterarguments began to form from up on his high horse, but watching his sister sag under the weight of her own cloudy confusion was enough to make him choke them back. Instead he stepped forward and gently put his hands on her shoulders, pulling her in for a hug. "C'mon," he said soothingly, before adding a wry, "Mom would murder me if I didn't." The nice thing about being in solitary, and being alone, is that Sadie didn’t feel like she had to hastily back out of her brother’s embrace to save face. They had their serious disagreements, but - as she’d said to Padraig earlier that week - he was her brother. So, she let him hug her, and returned the gesture, and even laughed a little at his attempt at levity. “Yeah, she would.” Pulling back, she gave him a worried look. “Do you know if everyone else is okay? I don’t remember what happened after they tased me...” "Yeah, everyone's fine." He reassured, freeing her from his embrace. "I mean, a lot of people are in solitary, but nobody got seriously hurt or anything." His expression tensed a little, "Things are tense out there though. People are freaking out. I mean, I know this whole thing was a total disaster, but I'm worried there's people who are just going to use it as an opportunity to make things worse." Worse. Hadn’t Valya said that things would need to get worse before people took action? At the time Sadie hadn’t believed it would ever happen, but now... now she could believe it, and she wasn’t sure how she felt about it. Not good. “Well, I’m sure you’ll keep ‘em in line,” she said, forcing a wry smile. Sam snorted at this notion, his eyes giving a significant roll. "Yeah, because everyone listens to me." The door abruptly opened, and one of the guards poked their head in. "Time's up, Sam." "Thanks Derek, out in a sec." Sam waved to the guard before turning back to his sister. He put a hand on her shoulder and squeezed. "Hang in there, kiddo. You'll be out soon, and back to being a pain in my butt." “That’s the plan,” Sadie replied, watching as the guard ushered him out the door and closed it behind him. Alone again. Sitting back down on the bed, her mind raced. A lot of people are in solitary, he’d said. Things are tense out there. Would they be the next Russian school? What was going to happen to them, out here in the middle of nowhere? She couldn’t even begin to imagine, but IVI had given her plenty of time to try. |
