The video keeps replaying, over and over again in his mind. The girl with the flowers in her hair. He wonders where she is now, and how badly they've hurt her. In front of his face, a pen flips, turning itself in a continuous, non-stop motion. He does this often, as he thinks. It's an exercise for his mind. He finds that it helps keep him calm. "Andrew." A tentative voice breaks his concentration; the vision of the girl falls from his mind. The pen stops twirling, frozen in the air. "Yes?" It is only then that Andrew realizes that someone else is speaking, too -- there are voices coming from the phone. Russian voices, like those that might have belonged to the Vols in the video, had they the opportunity to use them. These voices came from luckier sorts, he knew -- a pair of siblings that had managed not to get caught up in the country's barbaric rounding-up of Vols. They existed in every nation. Vols who could pass as humans or live on the run. Some were exceptionally smart, fantastic con artists who had managed to outwit the system. Others were surviving on dumb luck and natural abilities. "What are they saying?" "That everything is ready to go," the young man replies, his American accent giving no indication that he might speak any language beside English. "They're in position." Andrew nods with authority. Their attention is fixed on the phone, where Ilya and Anastasiya are speaking in hushed tones to their fellow Russians, so many miles away. Things are really coming together, Andrew thinks. Their little family is growing, both here and abroad, with new Vols reaching out to join their cause by the day. It might be too late to save the girl with the flowers, he thinks, but the idea is met with empty melancholy in his head. Ah well, some must always die. That is the way of war. "They want to know whether they should leave a message." Andrew smiles then, the first time today. "No. I believe that we can handle that." BREAKING: Apartment Building Collapses in Moscow Death toll estimated at 80, many more injured An estimated 80 people are dead in Moscow today, after a building collapsed with no warning. Reports from witnesses say that they saw portions of the buiding appear to weaken and crystalize before their eyes, with some saying that the bottom of the structure appeared to "turn into water," causing the upper levels to come crashing down. The building was home to many upper-level government officials. Suspicions flew that the collapse could be related to the recent detainment of Russian Vols who spoke out against their country's leaders, although there has been no confirmation of Vol involvement at this time. Initial reports indicate that some of the fatalities are children, with the Russian government stating that a daycare may have been run out of the building. UPDATE: Roughly thirty minutes after the building collapsed in Moscow, many government websites from across the globe were seemingly hacked. At present time, all of the websites appear to host only a single image: the words "VOLS RISING," written in small red flowers. [IMAGE] This story is still developing. |
