Mikael found it hard to leave Lilja after she'd been found. He stayed by her side, reading this or that while she slept. He fetched food for the pair of them and ate beside her. He took a nap or two on Astrid's bed while she was at class, not wanting her to wake up and find herself alone again. He tried not to think about Jonas or Devon because doing that made him so angry he couldn't do anything but stew about it. He knew he couldn't forgive either of them for doing it; Jonas had always been a dick, but Mikael felt somewhat betrayed when Lilja had told him who had done it. He hadn't expected it. But he wouldn't make the same mistake twice.
As Lilja slept on her bed, the blonde boy sat on Astrid's bed with his back pressed against the wall and his legs crossed, reading a magazine before him. He had his glasses on, which he only wore before he could put in his contacts, and though he looked tired, there was still an expression of intense interest in whatever article he was reading.
Lilja had been avoiding most people and sitting in her sweat pants. She was just so embarrassed about what had happened and people kept using the word kidnapping and her parents had gotten really angry about it too and so she just wanted to avoid everyone. She didn’t make eye contact and was probably driving Astrid crazy but she didn’t care, especially after Astrid had slept with a light on forever.
She also found that she was taking a lot of naps or at least pretending to when people came by. However, she rolled over onto her phone and opened one eye before reaching for her own glasses to put them on. Mikael was still there, he had barely left her side since it happened.
Hearing Lilja's stirring, Mikael glanced up from the article about data security he'd been reading.
"Hey," he said, simply. Taking in the sight of her, Mikael felt badly, as though he should have known or he should have been able to prevent it from happening. He didn't like that Lilja was so embarrassed and upset and seemed to be avoiding everyone; really, avoiding people was something Lilja did most of the time anyway, but it was more to the manner of and reason for her avoidance that he objected to.
Mikael rearranged his limbs and sighed. "You look like shit," he observed.
“You’re the one who was watching me sleep,” Lilja said, giving him a look before tossing her Iron Man pillow at him. “You don’t get to complain.” But still she sat up and ran her fingers through her hair automatically. She really needed to shower.
Mikael raised his right foot to ward off the Iron Man pillow, and kicked it to the floor. Then he shrugged, as he always did. "Not complaining," he said, then fell silent as he watched Lilja running her fingers through her tangled hair. "Are you going to stay awake now or do I have to talk to Iron Man?"
“You should talk to Iron Man,” Lilja told him. But she stayed sitting up anyway. She was glad that Mikael was there even if he was being his usually brotherly slightly overbearing at times self. It was one of the many things she loved about him. “I think he could teach you a lot about computers.”
A noise most akin to a snort resonated from the back of Mikael's throat. There was no way he was talking to a pillow, whether it was a Iron Man pillow or not. "What could Iron man teach me about computers?" He asked her in Icelandic, angling his head toward her and smiling wryly.
“Everything, he’s Iron Man, his powers are better than mine,” Lilja told him before she stuck her tongue out at him. Okay maybe she really should brush her teeth too. “So don’t disrespect him.” Her tone was far more playful than she felt but maybe it would make her feel better. There was that at least.
"No," Mikael retorted, but there wasn't any nastiness to his voice. "I bet you could show Ice Man a thing or two."
“Iron Man,” Lilja corrected him with a loud sigh.
"Whatever," Mikael said with a smile that said her correction was unnecessary, that he had been teasing her. "Go shower and we'll watch the trailer for Iron Man 3, and then watch the movies," Mikael said as he crouched over the edge of the bed, stretching his long arms to retrieve the pillow, before he pulled back and threw it back at Lilja, aiming for her head.
“The trailer is so good for that,” Lilja said barely dodging the pillow. “I can’t wait for it to come out.” That was the most excited she had been about anything in the past 24 hours. She sighed though and stood up to get some clean clothes to wear. Her side of the room was getting messy she thought, but she didn’t bother to pick up the pillow and kicked it under her bed before she went to pick out clean clothes.
"I know," Mikael said, meaning her eagerness for the movie to be released. He might have hoped they could see it at home, in the comfort of their own movie theaters, but Mikael was too much of a pessimist to expect that hope to come to fruition. With an exhale, Mikael propelled himself forward and off of the bed, and used his momentum to tackle Lilja, whose back was turned toward him, and hug her. He couldn't really express to her how worried he had been when he realized she was missing, nor could he articulate well enough how relieved he had been when they found her, as the worst scenarios imaginable popped up in his head like horrifying jack-in-the-boxes.
"Ég elska þig," he mumbled, his head perched upon her shoulder.
Normally Lilja would have said gross, but she let Mikael hug her and hugged the arms that were around her waist. But she thought that he needed the hug as much as she did, if not more. If their places had been reversed she would have been going out of her mind with worry and tried to murder Devon and Jonas on the spot. "Ég elska þig,” she replied turning to look at him and kiss his cheek. She and Mikael were more than just friends, they were brother and sister and she started to tear up a little bit.
Mikael didn't notice the tears that welled up in Lilja's eyes, but if he did he would have made some crack about how he would have to be mean to her if she didn't stop. Instead, he remained unaware, and let Lilja go after a moment. Then he jostled her in the shoulder. "You have morning breath. Go brush your teeth."
“You’re the worst,” Lilja said, wiping her eyes with the back of her hands. She grabbed her clothes that she’d had until Mikael had all but tackled her and she dropped them. “Don’t get too comfortable, I don’t take long showers.”
"Sure," was Mikael's short reply as he plopped himself upon Lilja's bed, Iron Man crushed to his chest in what looked like a hug. When she got back, he would be there.
