"Because I caught you sneaking out," she replied without thinking. But really. She was stupid, but she wasn't that stupid. He hadn't told her he was leaving, any more than she'd told him. It was pure chance that they'd run into one another on the way out the door. For her part, it had been happy chance. Even knowing why he'd married her, Opal still felt Henry was the best thing that had ever happened in her life.
She was sad he put away the star chart. She'd wanted to know more of the names, and learn some of the things he knew about stars. But apparently, she'd ruined things somehow, and now they were leaving. Maybe, though, maybe she could come back here. And see what was in some of the other books too. She might not be able to understand all the words in them, but maybe she could learn something.
Maybe if she did, he'd tuck flowers in her hair some more.
Then she had a thought, and she looked Henry and said, "If we are going to be the rulers one day, then why can't we change the way things are ruled?"
