"Um, no," she answered his question about the horses. She really hadn't even thought of doing so. Opal was unused to riding, she'd walked everywhere before as her family hadn't been wealthy enough to afford the care and feeding of such a large animal. Beyond that, she was not comfortable taking the horses out of the stables, because they really didn't feel like they were hers to take. They belonged to her father-in-law.
But she didn't say any of that. Not only because it would mean speaking a lot, which she didn't do if she could help it, but also because her mind kept returning to what he said about preferring to ride alone. Did he mean that she was going to ride with him? With him, with him? As in, behind him with her arms around him? Or, goodness gracious, in front of him with his arms around her?
Opal sort of forgot why she'd been going out this evening to begin with. What was important now was that she was doing it with her husband.
Though she should probably say something, so he would keep talking to her. She loved his voice. "So, where are we going?"
