Brushing the snow from her face, Buttons pulled her cloak a little snugger around her arms. She, like many others, based on the talk in the marketplace, could not wait for spring. It seemed to her to be taking its time this particular winter. While she enjoyed the pretty flakes and the peacefullness of it all, it made her trips to town much longer than usual. The drifts and the cold made it an uncomfortable journey. Even if the sun was out, the snow was nearly blinding, not making it much better. Today, it was the falling snow that was making it difficult to see very far.
Fortunately, Buttons knew her way quite well. Various rocks and trees lended their aid as landmarks, and she had made the journey enough times there was a snow-packed path most of the way. So it was that she was paying less attention than usual to her feet, and more on the area around her.
Despite the reduction in visibility, Buttons noticed something a little ways away. Something that would be hard to miss as it was bright red against all the white. Upon initial observation, she saw it was moving in her general direction, at an angle to her own path. Suddenly it stopped, the top part tipping up to reveal a face, still a bit too blurred by the snow to make out features, but definitely human.
Just then, the world seemed to rush up at her from a very strange angle.
"OOF!"
Stupid girl, she thought to herself as she received a faceful of snow. Buttons knew better than most to pay attention to things around her. Threats and dangers were everywhere. Yet in her curious gazing of the red person, she had continued walking without watching her step and somehow managed to trip herself up. Looking behind her, she saw the culprit- a dip in the path. Not very big, but enough for her feet in their automatic and unobserved movement to misstep, causing the fall.
Quickly, she looked up in embarrassment, hoping the red person hadn't seen her make a fool of herself.
